Product Description

First published in 1992 Counter Culture was conceived as part of a 'War of Position' against capitalism. It represents a vibrant alternative view of popular culture through reviews, debate and commentary. This anthology is an introduction to a radical new way of looking at our world. www.altculture.org

From the Publisher

This anthology has been put together both to mark the first twenty issues
of the magazine Counter-Culture and - naturally - to give something of the
flavour of what that Counter-Culture is all about. You'll see that there is
certainly an eclectic mix not just of media but different styles and genres
within each. There is enough thought-provoking stuff here, I trust, to
generate any number of ideas, conversations or even arguments!

I came to Counter-Culture late so it has been a pleasure - along with Pat
Harrington - to help select the anthology's content. My approach was
simply to pick things that seemed interesting or unusual but still to keep
a sense of the nature of the magazine. I was particularly pleased to
include The Deeply Green Book Guide which I hope will be used as a resource
and springboard for further "Green" reading.

Politically it seems all shades of opinion are reflected with an often
astute summary from one of the many reviewers.

Some of the chosen reviews are quite "light" and the review simple - I make
no apologies for including these as they - again - demonstrate the
diversity of the magazine.
You will doubtless notice the inclusion of reviews by Patrick Harrington
and some by me - and even one of my novels is included for review! Firstly,
Pat is (and has been) a main reviewer for Counter-Culture and has written
some great reviews; secondly, my inclusion is with Pat's grace and blessing
- for which I thank him.

Also my very great thanks to all the reviewers in this anthology and to the
various publishers, record companies, etc. who gave their material for
review.

Some mention has to be made of the Edinburgh Festival which with its Fringe
has provided the stimulus and material for the At the Festival section of
this book - long may they continue to thrive.

Counter-Culture, the magazine, continues to be published and I hope it has
a successful future. It is also available on the web at:
