42 Pages with illustrations on every other page.
Hugo wants a pet gerbil, but his Dad does not agree with keeping animals in cages. They agree a bargain. If Huge can stay in his bare room (it's being decorated) for 7 hours he can have one.
Hugo gets bored very quickly. He eats all his supplies and gets very bored with his three chosen toys. He uses his imagination to while away some time - pretending to be shipwrecked.
Eventually, he gives in. He goes outside to play. Neither he nor his Dad mentions the fact that he has lost his challenge. This is a very subtle ending.
There is acceptance by Hugo and quite approval from his father.
This book is not funny, but it does have a very strong (not preaching) message. It covers the difficult issue of the morality of keeping a pet.
This book would be suitable for middle/upper primary children.
