4.0 out of 5 stars Yorga remembered, 26 Nov 2007

These are the sort of vampire movies that Hammer should have been making in the 70's. All the Hammer sequels failed to match the original because Christopher Lee was given less and less to do.

In these updatings of the vampire legend Robert Quarry is exactly what Christopher Lee should have been in the later Hammer sequels. Count Yorga is still a blood-sucking fiend at heart but he is quite happy to sit and discuss the supernatural with a Doctor during the first film. He cuts quite a dash, and amongst the many vampire films I've seen, his portrayal is one of the very best.

Unlike Hammer again, there is no attempt to link these two films. The second film does not seem to follow the original film, and no explanation is given for how Count Yorga has returned from the undead.

The tension is racked up quite nicely throughout the films, particularly in the second and the modern (early 1970's) setting in Los Angeles and San Francisco seems to work well. Also both films are only a little over 90 minutes long so they don't overstay there welcome. This is a really nice double bill to get. The films rarely if ever get shown on TV these days and this is a real bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great double bill!, 6 April 2009

MGM did a grand job with the midnite movies lable, something fox seem eager to continue(excellent) bringing low budget goodness to the masses. This is one of the better releases from the vaults of AIP (american international pictures) my favourite independent studio of all time.

Count Yorga(1970)titled the loves of count iorga, vampire in opening credits. stars Robert quarry as the eponymous count, luring young women up to his 'castle' in the hollywood hills, and posing as a spirit medium to cash in on the new age hippie culture permeating the times. Other viewer compared this to hammer, well this is more a response to those movies, taking the count out of the gothic surroundings and placing him in the modern era. Modern horror such as psycho and night of the living dead had already brought horror into the modern era, and the gothic charms of hammer had already begun to wear thin. AIP themselves had already cashed in with the corman poe series, and this is a mostly successful attempt to bring the vampire into the modern era; better than dracula ad 1972, but not as good as the excellent kolchack the night stalker tv movie (and these both came later) Modern audiences used to explosions of gore and contemporary soundtrack coming in every 10 minutes or so may get impatient with a movie like this, but fans of classic old dark house, guys in cloak vampire movies will love this far more than tosh like twighlight or the umpteenth dracula adaptation.

The return of count yorga (1971) sees RObert quarry return in a film that defies the laws of sequels by being better than the first. This one see's the count take up residence in another mansion next to an orphanage near san franscisco after crawling out of a grave with his vampire brides in a very well done sequence. In fact it is easy to argue that the sequel has many effectivly done sequences, including a brutal home invasion and a GREAT ending, that make it even better than the 1st. (sound fx of santa ana winds is also very effective) Like the origional this has it's tounge in its cheek, witness yorga watching ingrid pitt in a hammer horror vampire movie (spanish language) and his expression when a man wins a costume competition as dracula. It also has a creepy child vampire, and lots of other things thrown in.

THe picture and sound on both these films is excellent as usual for mgm, and both films are presented 16x9 (1:85:1) widescreen and come with trailers. Midnite movies not always the best for extras but this is still definately a value for money package with the only caveate being thats its really for people aware of horror before scream and actually have patience. Fit this criteria and you will be richly rewarded
