Product Description

Synopsis

The transition from counselling skills courses to professional counsellor training challenges even the most able student. Assumptions and understandings are questioned and individuals often experience feelings of humility and inadequacy. Using a psychodynamic approach, From Counselling Skills to Counsellor aims to help trainees progress successfully from one stage to the next, becoming safer, more insightful practitioners. Core psychodynamic concepts are explored, in an accessible way, using illustrative case study examples. The book may stimulate the thinking and creative work of practitioners from other disciplines.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Counselling Skills to Counsellor, 31 May 2004
By m.e. moore (tyne & wear United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
In my work as a counsellor I work within a person centred model of counselling. I always found psychodynamic theory difficult to comprehend and did not have the confidence to step out. 'From Counselling Skills to Counsellor' has helped me explore my work and has given more depth to the words, 'how can I help'? Reading this book has given me a new understanding of what the client is saying and in this new 'hearing' I can be more insightful in my work with clients. Juliet's writing lifts the veil of such things as transference and counter transference, and projective identification making it understandable in clear straightforward examples, with relevant dovetailing theory, throughout the book.

I think this book will be invaluable to people who use counselling skills, in caring professions, and who want to know more. I have enjoyed the easy understandable syle of writing which has made psychodynamic thinking interesting and informative. The condensed history of psychodynamic therapists, especially Freud and Klein, and step by step case studies, have illuminated the psychodynamic approach for me. I wish I had had access to this book earlier. It has left me wanting to know more and I look forward to more books from Juliet in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 5 Nov 2008
A great book which is easy to read when compared to many text books. Concise and informative chapters on Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Bion and Bowlby. I would recommend this as a good overview book for any Psychodynamic counselling student.
