Excellent Counselling Skills for Pastoral settings, 5 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This book offers a readable and clear integrative skills model for a wide variety of pastoral contexts. Indeed the work could become a foundational first read for most involved in the care of others. The first half examins key skills, tasks and relational qualities in terms of starting, moving on and letting go. The style is approchable for the student and a clearly structured tool for the tutor. The numerous vignettes are a rich resource for understanding and learning about counselling, skills and pastoral care - while integrating the spiritual with the psychological. This alone makes the purchase worthwhile, I have already used several of these narratives as a tutor. The second half offers three excellent chapters exploring 'conflicts' with beliefs, values, power and sexuality; culminating in a powerful and poignant finale dealing with shame, guilt and forgiveness. The work's qualities include a spiritual focus based on relevant theological foundations that are integrated with psychodynamic, person-centered and narrative perspectives. The book is great value for those seeking to teach, lead or learn about pastoral care.
