'Replete with a wealth of suggested techniques that can be used when working with children of different ages' - Robyn M Gillies, School of Education, University of Queensland, Brisbane
Counselling Children is a highly practical, bestselling guide to skills and strategies which can be used in working with children who are experiencing emotional problems.
Written in straightforward terms, the book sets out the authors' model of sequentially-planned integrative counselling for children (SPICC) and describes the specific techniques which practitioners can use to help children
" tell their story and release troubling emotions
" improve self-concept and deal with unhelpful beliefs
" recognize their options and choices
" discover new behaviours, and manage impulsive behaviour.
The book also provides guidelines for selecting and using a range of media, play and activities and includes 30 photocopiable worksheets that are featured throughout the book. The worksheets are designed for practitioners to use directly with children to help them explore their feelings and experiences in more depth. Thoroughly revised and updated, this Third Edition features two new chapters on counselling children in groups.
Counselling Children, Third Edition is widely used in the practical skills training of counsellors, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses, teachers, and other professionals who work with children. It is also an ideal resource for any practice-setting providing counselling services for children.
Dr Kathryn (Kitty) Geldard is a lecturer in the School of Psychology and Counselling at Queensland University of Technology. She has many years of clinical experience as a child and family therapist in both mental health settings and in private practice. David Geldard is a psychologist experienced in working with children and families in community health and mental health settings and in private practice.

The main theoretical model used involves enabling the child to tell her/his story, and there are many practical suggestions about how to do this.
The authors suggest ways to use different media and recommend which media are suitable for different ages of children. My only caveat is that I have found it helpful to leave the choice of media with the children as this is empowering for them.
In addition to providing a framework for working with children, this is a useful handbook to refer to again and again. I highly recommend it.
