...I thought, hearing a trail on Jazz FM.I met Emily a few years ago when I was in a learning curve in improv and arranging. She was every inch and phrase the chanteuse, with an ardency to her phrasing that put me in mind of Mirielle Matthieu or the younger Juliette Greco (who spent a bit of time with Miles of course). It's great to find she's stuck with it and has crafted an album of extended originals. Her style is a bit more laid-back now but still as principled. The natural scatting and simpatico of the opening track instantly shows her assurance. The lyrics are imbedded in the lines interestingly as 'jazz poetry' and this set perhaps revives and extends that genre. Tenacity and groove.
