Product Description

Product Description

A guidebook to 42 day walks in the area to the north of Calpe in Spain's Costa Blanca. The rugged mountains of the Costa Blanca offer wonderful walking in a landscape of pinnacled ridges, enormous crags, and shady pines. Orange and almond groves enhance the valleys, whilst attractive mountain villages provide hospitality, offering a taste of the real Spain, far removed in character from the developed coastal strip. The walks are described in two books, which split roughly into west (book 1) and east (book 2). This book, volume 2, covers the area to the north of Calpe and includes walks in: Sierra Bernia / Ferrer, Sierra Olta / Toix, Val de Jalon, Val de Laguart, Val de Llosa, Montgo and outlying areas.

About the Author

Bob Stansfield has lived on the Costa Blanca for many years and written extensively about walking there. This is the first book of the enlarged second edition, including many new walks.

Find your way 16 Nov 2007
I like to think that I am an experienced mountain walker & have managed to do most of these walks in Vol.2. I have enjoyed doing these walks but must say that I have found it very difficult to find the start of some of them & have spent a good half hour looking around before getting going. The route descriptions leave a lot to be desired & most of the walks I have spent a lot of time doubling back to find the right path. This can often add an hour to a walk which can be a little dangerous in the winter months when the nights get shorter.
The one stroll in the book was not suitable for young children & non regular hill walkers. There are quite a few tough climbs which I would not describe as negligible. The walk states 5 hrs to do it at a gentle amble , where as the Route grading states a stroll as 2-3 hrs.
The times for the walks are reasonable accurate providing you do not go astray.
I would not recommend this book for a novice or holiday walker.

Walking book 16 Mar 2010
Excellent book with great walks but a bit short on the description side so finding the start of the walk is difficult and getting lost en route is normal. But then, we find all walking books covering this area suffer from the same malady.

Good ideas for walks 30 Jan 2010
Good selection of graded walks. The harder ones require the walker to be able to find their own route at times, but that is very much the nature of mountain walks in Spain, as the routes are not on official footpaths, but use a combination of marked paths, farm tracks, hunters paths, and cross-country walking.
