A slight let-down.,

At first I found this game cofusing because of the fact that you have to make organise your soldiers into companies and the use of guns against bayonets but srttling down I find it enjoyable. The gameplay is good and the graphics and clips shown are - well - I'm afraid I must describe them as nice. The battle for Europe option is good but doesn't have the level of economy management as would be preferable.
HOWEVER I have coplaints. The engine is second hand and it shows, even the main menu is in other ganes but that isn't important. It is not, as opposed to what has been said of it, very hystorically acuarate. The British Army used a double line not a triple and it is called canister not case that the cannons fire. The only army to use case shot is was the British. Cannister fire hundreds of musket balls in a cone from the cannon lashing into troops that a close enough as it dose in the game, case has asimilar effect but the balls come from a type of shell fired from a distance. It was a sort of secret weopon of the British. And most important is the cavalry. They should be able to charge into the enemy ranks, crushing them under hoof and slashing down with there sword as they pass, inflict horrible wounds or killing instantly. Instead they gallop up to the enemy, stop, and start prodding them with sword/lance. A solid infantry line can easily hold off a cavlry attack - quite the opposite in reality. This sort of thing may be acceptably in Age of Empires but most other RTS as games have long become more advanced. Allthough things like the miss naming of cannister may seem trivial it all adds up to show poor research and neglect of reality, one of the things that are most important a game like Cossacks II. The graphics are good but once again not up to date. It would be nice if you could zoom in or rotate but its fine as it is really. I'm afraid some of my complaints about it notbeing up to date may seem like I am saying it should be the same as other games which would not do. I am just saying that it's a bit behind times but it still needs good graphics requirment because they are quite good and it has those little video clips. One rperson said in a review 'The computer may well be able to give commands to 30 units at once, but us poor old humans can't!' In effect, you can. Press pause, issue as many orders as like to as many units and as soon as you unpause it they will be caried out as with most games. My main complaint is lack of accuracy although the volley fire is good. If there was an addon with more open maps with the abillity to merge companies into battalions allong with more historrical accuracy - it would be fun to use platoon fire, another thing unique to the British - I would certainly buy it. Until then I don't think you should bother (with addons). The original is still a good buy despite my complaints.

Good, but could have been so much better,

First, the good points good graphics and excellent, realistic battles inculding fatigue, morale etc. Unlike most games of its kind emphasis is placed on breaking enemy units rather than killing every last man. Tactical and strategic thinking win over who can produce the most troops in the shortest amount of time, and the battle for Europe mode is very good adding an element of diplomacy to your war-mongering.However the game feels somewhat unfinished and is crying out for an expansion. The selection of units is fairly limited and You can only play as a limited number of nations Britain, France, Austria, Prussia, Russia and Egypt, no Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweeden, Naples or any of the Indian kingdoms who took part inthe conflicts of the time. The game could also have included America for the 1814 war with Britain which would have at least given some reason to the shocking american accents that the troops speak with whether they be Egyptian or French. The campaign mode, (there is only the one single player campaign) while it is entertaining enough to play and teaches you the basics of the game, is some made up rebellion in Britain with an annoying plot filled with annoying characters talking about 'The Royal Army' an unforgivable inaccuracy for anyone who has any connection with the British army. The worst point of the game though is the Skirmish mode. again a very limited selection of maps and no random ones and no options for seeting up starting conditions (the original Cossacks let you set the number of computer players, let you set alliances, starting resources etc and a very handy peace mode allowing you to build up your forces before the fighting starts allowing for large battles rather than piecemeal skirmishes) This game has no features for altering start conditions, you get few resources and 10 peasants, thats it and only one computer opponent. This gives rise to unenjoyable games primarily won by 'rush' tactics These games are easily won if you play as Russsia or Egypt which can produce many cheap hand to hand units with little infrastructure but are near impossible if you play as say Prussia as the enemy usually has sent some units into your town before you've finished creating one. In all an enjoyable game to play that could have been truly excellent if the developers had added some exra features, however this would mean they would make less money when they decide to launch an expansion.

There are strategy "games", just a very few, that are so well-conceived, so realistic, so responsive that these days they are used in military academies to train mature students in military tactics and strategy...as well as giving old soldiers like me a great deal of mental satisfaction.Cossacks II, sadly, is not one such product. If you like to spend hours obsessed with pedantic detail for very little creative, emotive visual achievement then this may just be for you. I feel sorry for the folk who had to spend so much time on this work. And I'm disappointed that I had to wait a year or so to discover, as far as I am concerned, that they were wasting their time on what could have been a potentially great strategy treatment. That's a pity.
