Shinichiro Kimura directs iconic cosplay anime laughs. The beleagured East Oizumi High School Cosplay Club is struggling to stay afloat. Chako and her gang are short on members these days - down to two in fact and Chako must use all means at her disposal to keep the club together. Delmo, the magic fairy with the power to give any costume that extra magical lift - along with the bosom inside it - is Chako's first surprise. Ikebukuro, the seamstress owl is her second - this bird can knock up any costume in record time. The costumes are all set, then, but what of the members? Along comes the slightly perverted foreign exchange student, Jenny who, with a double D chest and an apparent fancy for young schoolgirls, may or may not be playing with a full deck. But, importantly, the team now has enough members to compete in local contests now and maybe even at world level...

Cosplay complex is a colourful, fanservice ridden anime. It lasts for 3 episodes and follows Chako and her cosplay association friends as they compete in the cosplay world series. You pretty much know what to expect with an anime like this. Plenty of girls, massive boobs and clothing flying all over the place. The only thing that sets Cosplay Complex apart from other titles and makes it more original is the nice reference to other animes in the form of the cosplay costumes. This gives this 3 episode OVA an air of fun as it is enjoyable to try and identify what the girls are dressing up as. Costumes vary from different animes such as Full Metal Panic, Slayers and Ruroni Kenshin. But don't worry if you can't figure them out, there's a nice special feature entitled Cosplay Identification 101 which tells you who the girls are cosplaying.

As the series follows the cosplay associations adventures (and misadventures) they try to throw in a bit of a story and a blossoming romance. But in a title such as this, it is difficult to take it seriously. I was a bit disappointed because I thought this anime was going to be really funny...like excel saga funny, but it really isn't. Don't get me wrong there are a few decent comic moments and I had more than my fair share of quiet chuckles throughout, but it's no where near as funny as other animes. One thing that annoyed me was that this anime had a tendency to try too hard to induce laughs, but apart from that, the anime wasn't too bad, if a little un-original.

The animation is very nice with plenty of bright colours and a lot of shininess. The music isn't too bad either, but it is a little forgetable. As far as special features go there is that cosplay identification that I mentioned, clean opening and closing and some annotated sketches.

this was one of the most disappointing dvd releases of the year for me. i was looking forward to purchasing it since i first heard of its release and when i bought it (near-on a month ago) i was anything but happy.

the story revolves around a girl called chako who is a member of the cosplay club at there school. when there team runs into hard times its up to them to find a new recruit and save the club from being canceled. this
is when an exchange student joins the club and from there on i honestly couldn't figure out the plot.

there are 2 problems with cosplay complex in my view:

1.it's flippancy : the story flips between so many sub plots that don't really go anywhere. and in some cases it drags out scenes making them pointlessly long

2.the shortness:another problem with this anime is that it attempts to do to much within 3 episodes and this makes it near impossible to actually think about whats happening on screen, which essentially causes the plot to weaken.

reading reviews of this DVD i was placed under the impression that it was going to share the same kind of humor as excel saga and in certain cases it made me raise a chuckle (hence the 2 star rating)

as for special features there is the usual clean opening and closing options as well as a few short segments about the concept art and even a couple of easter eggs layered throughout

although it is on the other hand very knowledgeable with its charicters. expect many cosplay charicters from manga and anime by the bucketful

if you are looking for a brilliantly funny anime you may want to look elsewhere

if however you are looking for a dvd that is light on humor, and hollow on general plot.but high on anime and manga references then this is the DVD for you

I might have enjoyed it were I less than 10 years old! Even then I doubt it. On the animation front I suppose it was very well drawn.

Cosplay Complex is a three episode series following a highschool Cosplay club who hope to make it through to the national Cosplay competition. Cosplay features in many Manga and Anime series - and also in real life as people engage in Costume Play for fun or as part of a competition. Here the Cosplay group are made up of highly excitable teenage girls who harbour crushes on various people including each other.

I was expecting a slightly mad Anime series akin to the acclaimed Excel Saga but apart from having many references to lots of other Anime series, Cosplay Complex has little to offer. At first glance this looks like the sort of animated series you'd see on kids TV, it's very cartoony with immature characters and lots of manic chattering. Each episode has a loose story but the mad goings on make it difficult to follow what's happening - partly because there is very little going on!

The show is fan-service heavy with lots of scenes taking place in the changing rooms and mild references to naughtiness - almost like a Carry On film, but with young girls rather than Sid James and Charles Hawtrey. By the third episode however the show started to redeem itself. It wasn't a great jump in quality but it started to introduce themes which look as though would have created a story-arc had the series continued beyond three episodes. Perhaps with more development the series would have become better, the characters could have been developed beyond the rather bland 2-D ones which we see here. But as it stands, the series isn't strong enough to warrant a full volume of epsiodes.

Animation-wise this looks good.
