7-dvd set, region 2. Over 13 hours Cosmos spans its own galaxy of topics to serve Sagan's theme, each segment deepening our understanding of how we got from there (simple microbes in the primordial mud) to here (space-faring civilization in the 21st century). In his "ship of the imagination," Sagan guides us to the farthest reaches of space and takes us back into the history of scientific inquiry, from the ancient library of Alexandria to the NASA probes of our neighboring planets. Upon this vast canvas Sagan presents the "cosmic calendar," placing the 15-billion-year history of the universe into an accessible one-year framework, then filling it with a stunning chronology of events, both interstellar and earthbound. Complete Landmark TV Series - 13 One Hour Episodes: (I): The Shores Of the Cosmos; (II): One Voice In the Cosmic Fugue; (III): The Harmony Of the Worlds; (IV): Heaven and Hell; (V): Blues For A Red Planet; (VI): Travellers' Tales; (VII): The Backbone of Night; (VIII): Travels In Space and Time; (IX): The Lives Of the Stars; (X): The Edge Of Forever; (XI): The Persistence Of Memory; (XII): Encyclopedia Galactica; (XIII): Who Speaks For Earth?

For people of a certain age Cosmos is legendary. It changed the way we think about the world and the universe, and it certainly changed the way TV presented science to the world.

Dr Carl Sagan was not only a super intelligent man, but he could communicate difficult and complex ideas easily to the masses.

Cosmos is simply the greatest science documentary in history. Sagan not only tells us about the story of the universe, but of the creation and formation of Earth, the Solar System, and of us. He travels through time and space in his spaceship of the imagination (a dandelion!) and also reflects on humanity's successes and mistakes when it came to enlightenment.

Cosmos was for me as a young child growing up a seminal moment of TV. To finally get to own it on DVD was amazing.

I cannot recommend this enough.

Having recently watched `The stars at night - The 700th' (congratulations to Patrick Moore on achieving the longest running TV series ever), it seems Carl Sagan got pretty much everything right during his short stay on our planet. The DVD's are as fresh and enlightening as the first time I saw the series on TV, and, considering the technology available at the time, the imagery is astounding. It is said "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God". Fully digitally remastered, take a look - and be amazed at the simplicity and purity of the message.

He was the David Attenborough of the cosmology...what more can be said? Sagan's ability to relate difficult concepts was top-notch, and the really cool thing is watching this and realizing some of the discoveries we've made since the original filming.

Also interesting to note is the genuine concern he expresses regarding the potential outcome of our technological adolescence - it was a dominating fear in his writing as well. Do we simply self-destruct?

Of particular interest to me was his consistent mention of the warming of the earth - this was 30 years ago, and it was a concern among scientific circles then. That some fools today can look at climate change as if it was some sort of new fad or trick just stuns me.
