Telegraph

'Hilarious and ingenious hymn to dadliness and all things dadly...'

Product Description

Liam is too big for his boots. And his football strip. And his school blazer. But being super-sized height-wise has its advantages: he’s the only eleven-year-old to ever ride the G-force defying Cosmic rollercoaster – or be offered the chance to drive a Porsche. Long-legged Liam makes a giant leap for boy-kind by competing with a group of adults for the chance to go into space. Is Liam the best boy for the job? Sometimes being big isn’t all about being a grown-up.

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book may be aimed at the 9-12 age bracket, but it's capable of being enjoyed by any age. Central character Liam, a boy so tall that people think he's an adult, is an entertaining narrator of the events that ensue when he pretends to be his friend's father, wins a competition, and jets off to China. His friend Florida, posing as his daughter, is to experience space tourism with him and a small group of other children from around the world, but of course it all goes wrong...

Most of the plot focuses around the build up to the launch, with less of the story taking place in space than one might think. The essential theme is the discovery by Liam of what it means to be a parent. Towards the end, he's referring to Florida as 'my daughter' without even thinking about it. The story is amusing and should keep most children, boys and girls, entertained up until the end. Thumbs up from this cynical adult.

This is a brilliant book for top-end juniors and above. It's the hilarious story of a twelve year old who looks like an adult and so pretends to be one, with the help of his Dad's handbook about "talking to teens". With his friend(/pretend daughter), Florida, he gets chosen for the unlikely task of going into space, the "adult" accompanying four children his own age. This is a great story for girls and boys, light-hearted from beginning to end, and yet there's considerable depth about the value of Dads and the joy of childhood and alittle real information about space, gravity etc. squeezed in too. A cracking story for a Dad to read to his children, or brilliant a father's day gift. I loved it.

"Cosmic," is a brilliant book aimed at children aged 9-13. It tells the story of Liam Digby, a very tall 12 year old, who finds there are many benefits of looking like a grown up, including going on all the best theme park rides. He finds that he can pass for an adult and when he wins a competition to go to a once in a lifetime trip to a new space park including a trip in a rocket. The only problem is he has to bring his daughter... and thus ropes in school friend Florida.

The beginning of the book, particularly the worldwide competition reminded me of the "Golden Wonka Bars" in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The other 'chosen children' and in particular the other fathers are similar to those caricatures of the children in the aforementioned Road Dahl story. However Cottrell Boyce has a much more sympathetic and realistic view of humans and so there are grey tones rather than everything being in simplistic black and white.

As Liam takes more responsibility for his daughter Florida he becomes more aware of the things that dads do. It is the subtlety of how Boyce paints the relationships between parents and children that makes this book stand above the rest. Of course in a story about children flying into space there is going to be an element of fantasy and disbelief but it is so well written that it really doesn't matter! Highly recommended!

St Christopher was some kind of giant superhero who used to carry travellers across a river, and one day this toddler turned up and asked him to carry him. St Christopher popped him on his shoulders and carried him, but the toddler kept getting heavier and heavier and heavier until St Christopher nearly drowned. It turned out the toddler was Jesus, so when St Christopher was carrying him, he was carrying, well, the world. It was a story about gravity "e;
