The person I describe above is a world away from the person I am today. I mean, I live in a house valued at £500,000. If it were located in London it would be worth about six times this figure. I drive a luxury car, and it is not on finance – I own it outright. I have turned my life, and myself, around. From being a negative-minded loser, I have become a positive-minded winner. How did I do it?
When I began trying to make things happen in my life I grasped at any straw. I even went to some of those pyramid selling meetings you hear about, where everyone comes away with a blank stare as they think of the riches that are within their grasp. All that I would come away with was a strong thirst and a headache.
I was looking to control my own destiny, but something was missing from my life. What was that elusive magical ingredient? I would scan old newspapers lying around in betting shops and go straight to the ‘opportunities’ pages, where I would daydream of running my own company, being in charge of my own life.
In between races I would read of how people became rich beyond their wildest dreams whilst running a plumbing call-out service or an employment agency. All I wanted at the time was for my riches to come in on the back of the favourite I had put my money on. Invariably, I would leave the betting shop poorer than I had gone in. Again, I cursed at my wretched life and my continuous losing streak.
You see, I was mixing with losers, and so I had become a loser. You don’t have to be a negative-minded person to be a loser. The betting shop was full of positive-minded people – they were all certain that the next bet they made would be the one to solve all their financial problems. They didn’t see that you have to take control of your own life if you want to solve your problems, you can’t simply rely on a horse. Looking back, I realize that then I had reached rock bottom. The good thing was that there was only way to go – up!
