For those of you looking for a budget friendly decent gaming keyboard with some macro keys - this is it. I bought this one as I sold my Microsoft SideWinder X6 one with my last PC build and was using generic one for a while. What a pleasure to get back to quality keyboard with proper rollover.Read more ›

Bought by a family member to replace a mechanical keyboard that has now fallen out of favour, although very functional. As ever, it is a matter of personal preferences.

The Corsair K-30 Raptor copies the design and appearance of their more expensive models, some selling at 3 or 4 times the price of this. While copying the appearance, it does not share the metal chassis and deck of the more expensive models but is of all-plastic construction. It feels very rugged and lacks the flex that some inexpensive keyboards seem to include. This is a definite plus!

The key layout is quite standard for the UK although layouts and key sizing (Return key, typically, plus a few others) can vary. The added extra with this is six programmable 'G' keys down the left-hand edge to set various gaming macros. There are also three Mode (M1 - M3) keys across the top left row plus the usual multimedia keys. Outside of gaming, these keys may be used for other purposes.

The keys are of the rubber dome type and key heights are similar to the quite raised keycaps of the Cherry mechanical keys used in Corsair's top models. They don't quite have the same feel but share a similar amount of key travel. The keyboard will be immediately familiar in action to others from Corsair and those that use the same mechanical keys as their top-of-range but will need some acclimatisation for those moving from one of the low-travel, low-profile keyboards as used by most laptops and many modern external keyboards.

So this review is coming from someone who was interested in buying a mechanical board, until i saw this item. I wanted mechanical because i'd heard the keys were more responsive than standard cheaper boards hence their different switch types and higher price tag.

When i got the item i was really surprised at its weight, the metal construction really reinforces the design and on trying to warp the board, it wouldn't move an inch. I couldn't find it stated anywhere, but the board has a two year warranty so if the unit became defective you'd just need to RMA it to Corsair who i've heard good things about their support.

The gaming features are what really make this K50 a steal. The alternative mechanical keyboard for me would have been the K95 which carries a 130GBP price tag which i wasn't willing to spend on a board alone. The back lighting is simple to use and customize, a quick download from Corsair (no driver disc) allowed me to speedily update the firmware then use the software to change up the lights and macros. Be aware, if you do not flash the firmware first, then when you do it will revert the board to defaults so do it when you get it. Macro keys can either be inputted into the software or you can use the MR (Macro Record) button on the top left of the board. The unit also features an M1-3 button above the macro pad which i believe are profiles and likewise can have different back lighting assigned to them, for example if you use one profile for WoW you could use blue lighting, and for Starcraft you could use red so as not to confuse yourself with the profiles you've set. Back lighting can be adjusted through: Off, 33%, 66% & Full with the use of the light button above the scroll lock, and the windows key disable button is just above and to the left of the F1 key.

Okay to start off I'll say the package came next day so extremely good delivery on Amazons part.

The keyboard itself.
At a first glance the keyboard looks very well designed and honestly looks and feels excellent for the money you've paid.

Whilst is isn't a mechanical the keys feel to me like they have a very short push point e.g. how much you have to push the key for it to obviously register. It's almost similar to my cherry reds obviously the difference is there but in all honesty....there isn't that great a difference.

The metal frame of the keyboard honestly makes it feel crisp it's like the finishing touch to it. The keys aren't slippy and over a really nice distance between each one. I came from the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Logitech Keyboard to this. I've saved some space on my desk and also noticed that the keys feel slightly more bunched together.

I've already logged a few hours in to it on games such as Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and Counter Strike:GO.

Now this is where we get in to detail - FPS games such as the ones I listed....you honestly won't notice much difference from a £20 keyboard except from reliability perhaps and the macros. I don't personally use any of the macro keys because I can't think of anythink they could help with. Perhaps an item for quick use on Team Fortress 2 ? But that would be upto the user.

Where it really shines is MMO games. World of Warcraft the side macro buttons G1, G2 etc I used mainly for proffessions and mount buttons. However your actual macro buttons situated at the top - M1 - M2 - M3 - These little beauties. I set M1 - M2 up as different macro pages. One for my warrior and one for my priest.
