Soon an interracial relationship crossing the social mores of the era is underway. Written and directed by Jessie Nelson (The Story of Us), the film is a spot-on recreation of 1950s suburbia without gratuitous kitsch. Liotta is perfect as a working man of the day, given to white shirts and narrow ties; Goldberg gives one of her finest performances as the level-headed Corrina; and little Majorino is heartbreakingly effective. This is one of the best films you will ever watch. Yes it is a feel good romantic comedy? but what's wrong with that because it is very well done. The young Tina Majorina will just melt your heart. Whoopie is just amzing in this film beautiful, wise. The film is about a widower (Ray Liotta) who hires a housekeeper (Whoopie Goldberg) to keep house and look after his young daughter (Tina Marjorina) who has become increasingly withdrawn since the death of her mother. The film is set in the 1950s or 1960s so there are racial connotations. Its beautifully made and it is a film you will always remember.

The story of a black woman who comes to work and care for a white motherless child and her widowed father. Good performances from Ray Liotta and Whoppee Goldberg - both playing against type. A heartwarming story of love against the odds - this being 50's America where black and white's together were unheard of. Good support from Tina Majorino as the girl in question - grief not an easy role for a youngster to convey. A lovely cameo from Don Ameche - in one of his final performances (he completed his scenes just days before his death). A truly charming film.

I first watched this movie when I was young, and I have rewatched it recently and it still has the same magic it had before.
This is a sweet, slightly sad tale of a young girl who's mother dies. The girl refuses to speak after her mothers death, and it is only when her father hires a nanny to look after her that she begins to come out of her shell. The magic and friendship that grows between the nanny and the little girl makes a heartwarming tale that will be enjoyed by all.
I definitely recommend you watch this, no matter how old you are you will find this film enchanting and entertaining and definitely memorable.
