Product Description

A retired New Jersey bank clerk in inherits a bundle of letters to his great-grandfather a bookseller in Victorian London who had corresponded at length with leading writers of his generation Dickens, Thackeray, Eliot, Trollope, Butler and Hardy Hall brings off an intriguing conceit convincingly in this series of letters (mostly emails) between Larry Dickerson, a retired bank worker, bent on getting as much money as he can for his great-grandfathers precious letters, and Stephen Nicholls, the patient, scholarly, and helpful head of Christies manuscript department in London. While Nicholls leads Dickerson through the intricacies of the auction process, he also helps him enter into the Victorian mind, a domain Dickerson eventually embraces with enthusiasm. The result is a book that is part suspense novel, will he sell or wont he; part literary tour de force, because the old letters lead us into the thoughts of the foremost novelists of the period; and part picaresque tale, because of Dickersons distinctly American personality. This is a book for lovers of Victorian literature.

A fascinating read that will prove hard to put down, highly recommended 16 July 2011
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com

The drive of the writer is an enigma to even writers. "Correspondence: An Adventure in Letters" is a novel from N. John Hall that explores the relics left behind to Larry Dickerson, who finds a slew of letters he shared with many of the great writers in the western world of the past. A retired bank clerk, Larry seeks money more than all else, and working with a British Scholar of Literature in Stephen Nicholls, he finds that he can get his money, but he will pick up much more valuable along the way. "Correspondence" is a fascinating read that will prove hard to put down, highly recommended.

sensational! 28 Oct 2011

As Larry learns about the Victorian novelists whose letters he's going to consign to Christie's, and eventually reveals their contents, they come to life. Great humanizing and well imagined glimpses into the minds of Dickens, Trollope, Thackeray, Mrs Gaskell, Darwin, and Hardy. I read this book straight through and highly recommend it.
