Product Description

Multiple victims killed by another angry gunman at the local mall. What if there were someone out there who could prevent the slaughter, even after it happened?

Is Jake Waters a hero or a hardened criminal? Unfortunately, those who might consider him the former are usually blissfully unaware he has passed through their lives and has changed their destinies in such a dramatic way. Regrettably, the police and FBI see his actions in a wholly different light, and while they have yet to determine whom the mysterious killer is, they continue their search and are building up both a profile and a backlog of unsolved cases. They are perplexed at his actions and how he has had the advanced knowledge to perform his surgical removals.

Jake, ex-military and a survivor of the war in Afghanistan, tries to pursue his own destiny as a freelance programmer who writes computer games and consults with NASA on special projects. He is blessed or cursed with a special skill, depending on your perspective, one which makes him aware of events that no one else is. As a result, he sometimes feels it necessary to take action on his own. Those he removes have been planning numerous horrific deaths, and he does not feel bad by his actions. He also suspects the police will one day stumble upon his identity or catch him in the middle of one of his missions. Then he will have to rely on his ability to elude them.

For the most part, Jake is an average guy. Except for his ability to back-track, of course. That makes him different from everyone else and has not only saved his own future, but has often provided him the means to help others. Unfortunately, he's learned that providing that help came at a large personal cost and not a little risk. For the most part, he feels the results are worth it.

Jake's own life has become more complex of late. He has become seriously interested in a young woman, Karin Wolter, who he hopes to bring closer to him. For their relationship to progress, Jake feels it will be necessary to reveal what he can do, and what he has done in the past. He is concerned how she might react once he reveals his past to her. She has never understood violence, and has expressed some concerns over what he had been forced to do in the military.

After her mother is killed, Jack's close friend Cheryl comes to him for help in ensuring the death doesn't happen. When his attempt to help doesn't go as expected, Jake learns of another event that forces his hand. It becomes necessary to reveal himself to the FBI in the hopes he can gain their trust and help to prevent the impending disaster from taking place. Even if he is able to turn aside the catastrophe, he is uncertain what his own future will become once the FBI has their hands on the man they have been seeking for so long.

What if you KNEW something terrible was going to happen but you had the ability to change it? What if the only way you could change it was by killing someone?

Jake has an ability that allows him to go back short distances in time and alter what happens. He uses this ability for good and stops mass murders being committed.

The only problem is that the FBI is onto him. Things get even more complex when Jake realises the only people who can help him prevent an enormous tragedy are the same people he has spent years trying to avoid.

I really enjoyed this book, it took me a little while to get into but by the end I was hooked. It’s well written, the plot has clearly been thought through. The characters are likable and believable, so you care what happens to them.

I tend to find some science fiction books difficult to read as I can only suspend belief so far but this book had the perfect balance of science fiction against a realistic backdrop.

What I also liked about this book is it prompted me to have some really interesting discussions with people about what they would do if they had Jakes ability.

A good read that I would definitely recommend.

A very clever and original novel that is most unlike any other story involving time travel I have read. Rather than physically going back in time, Jake is only able to send his memories back to an earlier version of himself within a limited time and physical distance. He uses this ability to 'correct' violent crimes from ever having taken place.

The consequences from his actions and the scrapes he ends up in are well thought through and lead to an exciting and imaginative story.

I can thoroughly recommend this book and will be looking to read more of Bob Blink's material in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good story 12 Jun 2013

A good story, well constructed and told, although with a some resemblance to the movie Next, and the usual Bob Blink obsession with firearms, reading in some parts like a gun store catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book 5 Oct 2013

Although slow to start, I really enjoyed this story and when i finished it in les than 2 days, I of course, started to search for a book 2. But sadly no book 2 (yet). The author kind of leaves you hanging at the end with a snipit of a possible future release...

This story has a very different twist on a time travel adventure. I don't like to give away the story / plot, but i would highly recommend this book!

If you enjoy suspense and adventure, then i highly recommend you read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, face-paced read with decent character development 2 July 2014

Good, face-paced read with decent character development. It was hard to put down once I got started. There seemed to be an opening for a sequel at the end of the story but I see Mr. Blink has written some other books since this one has come out so maybe not.... I'll be looking.
5.0 out of 5 stars Literally couldn't put it down 26 Sep 2014

I usually read a book over the period of a week or so, as I just don't have the time to spend. This darn book had me so hooked after the first few chapters that I couldn't stop reading it through to the end. Unlike many other books, the only typo I noticed was 'loose' for 'lose; so very well edited. And the only plot point that bothered me was one I think someone else mentioned in another review (if I'm remembering correctly). Other than that one (to me) obvious flaw, I felt the main characters acted in an intelligent, believable fashion. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Overall, I thought the storyline was good. It captures the imagination and holds on to it. However, I thought there were some areas of the story the author went overboard on details, such as describing the intimate working details of various Guns and accessories. Yet in some other areas it seemed as if things were wrapped up a little to quickly, such as when the main character completed his various missions. There would be a lot of detail about the set up and execution of the characters mission, and then once it was completed, the wrap up of those particular missions appeared thin and rushed.
