Product Description

Review

The two British authors...are able to present their thoughts in a distinctly straighforward manner, which is not always the case with their academic peers... In fact, there's enough solid material on the subject to almost make you think you could tutor a degree course with just this book at your side. (Ethical Performance magazine )

Product Description

This much needed textbook examines the multiple dimensions to corporate responsibility. It creates a framework that presents a historical and interdisciplinary overview of the field; a summary of different management approaches; and a review of the key actors and trends worldwide. The authors take a critical perspective and successfully provide a balance between theory and practice. They offer comprehensive coverage of the subject, combining an insightful, interdisciplinary, approach with the pedagogy and support sought after by students. An online resource centre will accompany the text, comprising weblinks, new legislation, further reading, email listservs and links to courses for students, and case studies and essay questions for lecturers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for MBAs, Graduate and Undergraduate students, 5 Dec 2008
This is an excellent overview of corporate social responsibility. I've been using this book as teaching material for MBAs and postgraduates, and as a reference for my research and publications on the consequences of business for developing economies and marginalized communities since it came out. My students have found it to be an excellent resource that provides a balanced view of CSR as theory and as practice and avoids positioning itself as either for or against CSR. For those of us working in this field, it is considered one of the best texts to come along.

The book makes clear that when we use the term CSR we are talking about two distinct things: 1) the role of business in society - what that means, how it has changed, what society wants of business, what business wants of the rest of society, etc; and 2) how business manages its relationship with wider society. This book is a great introduction to both those aspects of CSR.

I find the text to be quite unique in the depth of coverage it provides: it offers a historical perspective; an informed and sophisticated analysis of CSR in the context of international development and globalisation (given the amount of space); and a very thoughtful discussion of CSR's impacts, different schools of criticism, and future. If what you want is 'critical' in the sense of fault-finding and censorious, then this isn't the book for you. However, if you are seeking a critical introduction in the sense of careful judgment and observation, this is an excellent introduction to the CSR field. I would highly recommend it to university professors and researchers who are seeking a sophisticated and balanced understanding of CSR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CSR textbook on the market, 12 Feb 2009
By JG Frynas - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is arguably the best textbook on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on the market, which covers all of the key aspects of CSR that you could imagine. It goes far beyond other books that focus largely around CSR practices only. It addresses the historical origins of CSR, theoretical basis of CSR, societal impact of CSR as well as practical implementation.

This is an intellectually challenging and ambitious book, that provides an excellent reader for both beginners and experienced CSR insiders. It provides different perspectives on topics and can be used for identifying further readings. It challenges our knowledge and understanding of CSR in a way that other books rarely do.

My only concern is that the book may be difficult to use for teaching undergraduate students, who are used to being presented simple textbook information along the line of "CSR is defined as..." rather than "CSR can alter depending on what lens we use". It is certainly an ideal book for postgraduate students, academics, consultants, corporate managers and others, who are trying to make sense of the bewildering world of CSR.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst CSR "textbook", 12 Oct 2008
This is the worst textbook you'll find currently available on CSR. Deep ignorance of global issues, trends and historical perspectives, especially on the social movement and civil society dimension of CSR. Written form a very narrow UK (?!) perspective, shows how little the authors actually understand about CSR. There is nothing critical in this book. It is written from a pro-business perspective, aiming to be mainly a what-to-do guide for practitioners (explicitly assuming that as a practitioner you do not really need to understand much, just a few tips will do...). Why would such a reputable (?) publishing house would publish such rubbish is a mystery (unless you understand how the old-boys' network works, and how book are "reviewed" before publication, in the UK...)
