Book Description

14 April 1998 0273630083 978-0273630081 1

This is a stand-alone textbook concentrating on core topics in finance. It builds from no knowledge up to intermediate knowledge. The aim is to build an integrated understanding of the three decision areas in finance: investment, financing, and the dividend decision. These themes are introduced in an introductory chapter and explored in the following chapters with reference to the overall picture given in the Introduction. Finally, three integrated chapters cover acquisitions and restructuring, the management of interest rate and exchange rate risk, and international investment decisions. The book is particularly aimed at courses where lecturers are teaching under time constraints and need to concentrate on essentials only. The book is well illustrated and very strong pedagogically, with an excellent supplements package. Numerous FT case vignettes are used to bring a real-world perspective to the subject.

“The material is covered in a way which is easy for students to understand…The quality of the questions was sound and they were well-focused… References and recommended reading were some of the best I have encountered.”  Penny Belk, Lecturer in Finance, Loughborough University Business School

“The best aspect of the book is its accessibility and conciseness – unlike many books in the field it is a readable text which gets the main points across quickly.”  Kerry Sullivan, Senior Tutor Finance, School of Management, Surrey University

“Overall the book’s content is very well balanced.  It covers all the major areas within the corporate finance field to a suitable depth and level for the intended audience.  The writing style is extremely engaging – the book is very well written and draws you in as you read, to read further.” Richard Trafford, Senior Lecturer in Finance, Department of Accounting and Law, University of Portsmouth

5.0 out of 5 stars Making corporate finance understandable! 20 July 2000
By A Customer
Economics and finance are not the easiest subjects to understand (well not for me anyway! ). Having looked at all the US finance texts, most of which ressemble the London phone book, it was a relief to find a book that explains the principles of finance in an easy to understand fashion and that gradually introduces you to the more advanced topics. The chapters flow in a logical manner and I found myself almost enjoying studying finance! Finding a book that balances readability and depth is often hard but this book does.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good intermediate finance book 20 Nov 2003
Although a little long-winded in places, this is a good reference book for anyone wanting a slightly more than basic understanding of various corporate finance concepts, talking about derivatives, hedges, ratios etc. It was certainly useful to me obtaining an A in a module in it at university!
