More About the Author

Paul Burns is Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Bedfordshire Business School. For ten years he was Dean, stepping down at the end of 2011.

He was Professor of Small Business Development at Cranfield School of Management for ten years, where he launched the Graduate Enterprise Programme in England, which was offered at numerous Universities and formed the model upon which much of University entrepreneurship teaching is now based. He started his academic career at Warwick University Business School, where he set up the Small Business Unit.

For eight years he was Director of 3i European Enterprise Research Centre researching small firms across Europe.

He has been a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Business School, USA and for three years was Visiting Professor at the Open University Business School where he developed the multi-media Small Business Programme which was screened on BBC2.

He is Fellow and a former President of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) and is a chartered accountant, having qualified with Arthur Andersen in London. For four years ran his own firm, Design for Learning Ltd.
Paul has forty years experience of working with hundreds of entrepreneurs, small firms and their advisors, including the partners of Grant Thornton and BDO Stoy Hayward, 3i, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Lloyds Banks. He has advised and consulted at various levels of government in the UK and overseas. He has worked with partners in GP practices around the country and Head Teachers in secondary schools in Bedfordshire to help them develop their strategies.

He is author of over 20 books and hundreds of journal articles and research reports. Entrepreneurship and Small Business: Start-up, Growth and Maturity (Palgrave-Macmillan) was first published in 2001. Now in its third edition, it is the best selling textbook on this topic in the UK, praised for its authoritative blend of theory and practice.

Corporate Entrepreneurship: Building an Entrepreneurial Organisation (Palgrave-Macmillan) was first published in 2005 and is now in its second edition. The third edition will be published in September 2012. It shows how strategies for encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation might be embedded in larger organisations through the concept of 'architecture' - leadership, culture and structure. It is one of the few UK books to sell well in the USA.
