I was delighted when I learned this classic week of Coronation Street was to be released on DVD. Alas, it is not withouts its flaws. For some reason, all but two of the episodes (including the crash itself and, bizarrely, the live episode) have been given that terrible "filmic" treatment which turns the broadcast videotape clarity into an irritating blur in a feeble attempt to make it look cinematic. This is particularly obvious when the end credits for the live episode roll; the effect is abysmal. One wonders why this has been done, especially in these days of HD.
Although it's a blessing not to sit through endless furniture store sponsored adverts, some of the editing is abrupt; never more so than the climax to the crash episode itself, when the beautifully directed (thanks to the excellent Graeme Harper) final shot, with Ken and the other residents taking in the horror of the disaster, ending in a stunning CGI shot of Weatherfield, is cut off in its prime. The broadacst version was so much better.
The DVD is redeemed by the excellent extras, however: originally available online, it's great to finally own the superb behind the scenes documentaries, an incredibly touching scene with Ken and grandson Simon, and an interesting (but facetiously-narrated by Craig Charles)look at 50 years of stunts on the Street.
At the end of the day, a two disc set for (in most retailers) less than £10, it's a fair purchase; just not for Street purists.
