Coronation Street has always presented quality programming, and that didn't change at the beginning of the 00s. However, there is definitely a change in the show. Episodes in this boxset are much more action packed, maybe even too action packed. There's a heck of a lot of explosions and fires which can be slightly draining, although still entertaining nevertheless. Compared to the previous 4 boxsets, it's got to be said that this one just simply isn't as good. It's entertaining stuff, don't get me wrong, particularly in terms of nostalgia, but the influx of terrible characters/actors in the 2000s increased. Sean and Tracy spring to mind, but there are many more. Of course there are some fabulous characters, such as Richard Hillman and Shelley, but to me this boxset stands out as the weakest of the 5. However, it's still worth a watch, but with no subtitles or extras, £42 is slightly a high amount to pay.

I have all of the Coro boxsets now, but have to agree with other reviewers, now I have seen right through the years, the 2000's aren't as good as the 70's , 80's and 90's. When you watch them from decade to decade it is really obvious the stories are just trying to be too dramatic, which I suppose is keeping up with the times. Also, there were far too many 'to be continued', most frustratingly 2007 when Tracy whacked Charlie over the head with the statuette. Instead of showing the outcome (which we all know) the next one was a boring episode from 2 months later, featuring just Tracy and Deirdre, talking about Tracy's upcoming court case for the murder. So boring, infact, that my daughter and I fast forwarded it, something we have never done in the history of all our Coro boxsets! I really dont know how or why they have chosen some of the 2000's episodes, but disappointingly have missed some really good ones out. (I never thought I would give a negative comment to Coro, I am a life long fan! Sorry)

Having only quite recently become a regular Coronation Street viewer, it's been great familiarising myself through the 80 episodes in this box set with the characters and storylines that made the show the institution it is today.
I had already started collecting and reading quite a number of books on the Street and its origins, and these dvds are a terrific way of bringing to life what I'd been reading about.

The dvds come in a nice, compact box, and I was pleasantly surprised the box includes a booklet outlining the contents of each episode in the collection.

As I'm not a native speaker of English, I would have liked English subtitles... although I must admit I find the dialogue in Weatherfield easier to understand than that in Walford.

I already owned the other decades in this DVD series, so bought this one purely to complete my collection. If you enjoyed 'Coronation Street' over the noughties, then this is a must-have. However, I didn't like the change in the show, far too quick-paced, action-packed, explosions left right and centre, too many affairs, and everything becoming more and more far fetched. I know that the show has to keep a young audience, but give me the warmth and cosiness of the 1970s and 1980s 'Coronation Street' any day.

That's not to say that I found nothing to enjoy here, I did, hence the three stars. The wonderful acting of Bruce Jones and Vicky Entwistle when Janice announced to Les in 2001 that she was leaving him for Dennis, was just as good as I remembered. The Richard Hillman saga really was good, Brian Capron played the villain very well, and I can still clearly remember when he attempted to smother Emily, and when Audrey realised what he was up to, well done also to Sue Nicholls. Gail and Eileen's Street fight has become legendary, Les and Cilla's chaotic fake wedding is a funny one, and Vera's death is a real tearjerker, where husband Jack finds her lying there dead. On a happier note, the now infamous scene where Blanche attended Peter's AA meeting should be shown in cinemas before a comedy film starts.

So yes, I think that the compilers did a good job in picking out the episodes. There's some good stuff, but just not even highlights for me unlike the other decades. Bet Lynch's return to the cobbles was fairly embarrassing, it wasn't so much Julie Goodyear, but the writers themselves, they could have written better for her, and Bet's image should have been toned down, she looked completely out of place in 2002. Sometimes 'classic Corrie' has to remain in the past.

I know when there are only eight episodes covered in a year that all the great episodes can't be covered. I think there should have been a few longer episodes so that the storylines could have been played out. It was good to see the old characters though, and I'm sure I will buy the next decade when it comes out

Change rules the world - also on Coronation Street - a very well depicted social epic of the years 200 - 2009 in all its glory and downfalls of a modern society living in the millenium.
