Scheming Cilla Battersby is back – and this time she’s got her eye on the main chance. The selfish mother-from-hell is on the verge of pulling off her most audacious scam to date but there’s one small problem. Cilla needs her family to join her in South Africa.

But after deserting them so many times before – she’s going to have to go to extraordinary lengths to convince or cajole Chesney, Fiz and even Kirk to fly across the world and put aside their differences if they are going to hit the jackpot!

Our family are great Coronation Street fans, so bought this DVD to watch over Christmas. Sadly it did not meet our expectations. The characters involved are usually very amusing, but in this they simply were not funny and the jokes were very tired. You get to see very little of South Africa, in fact a lot of it seems like an advert for the Sun City Resort. The whole thing was over-long and very dissapointing.

A disappointment of a film for Corrie fans. The biggest cheat was that Les Battersby was no where to be seen and we were led to believe in the advertising and at the start of the story that he would be there. The storyline was weak and the acting was lethargic and not very amusing.

This is truly appalling! I've been a fan of Corrie since I was little and I expected this DVD to have the same standard as the show. I've just watched most of it using the fast forward button. The storyline was almost non existent and the acting was of the amatuer dramatic variety. I feel totally disgusted that ITV would produce this rubbish and then charge people for it. Throwing my money down the drain would have been more satisfying.

I don't watch 'Coronation Street' anymore, but usually enjoy these straight-to-DVD films where characters are allowed to venture away from Weatherfield and plenty of laughs are ensured, particularly in the 1997 'Viva Las Vegas' special with Jack and Vera Duckworth. Virtually from the start, I thought that 'Out of Africa' wasn't going to be as good as I thought it would be. At first, it tried a little to hard to be funny, and a lot of humour felt forced to me. Think of the latter series of TV's 'Benidorm'. Fortunately, it began to pick up.

Chesney and Kirk arrive in South Africa to visit Ches's neglectful, appalling mother Cilla Battersby, who has a new 'Les' in her life - but it isn't her former husband, who was played by poor old Bruce Jones. Being the woman she is, Cilla has a motive in inviting the hapless pair over to her new world, and that is to win a competition for $500,000.

This film would never fit in with the nightly 'Corrie' episodes, as unrealistic as the show is now, 'Out of Africa' is completely unbelievable, very over the top, and is made almost entirely for laughs. However, don't dismiss it, because it does have it's good points.

Wendi Peters is fabulous as the brassy Cilla, a real pantomime style villain, and although the character really is the mother-from-hell, you can't help but love the woman as we see her sink to the depths of bad parenting, and her constant scheming knows no bounds. Sam Aston was great as Chesney when he was a nipper, and his acting here is considerable. It's Chesney's relationship with his mother provides the few touching moments, as we see him reaching out to Cilla for her to love him and be a mother, but she just doesn't have it in her to do so. The scenery of Africa, of what we see of it, really is stunning.

As a Corrie fan, I obviously didn't want to miss this disk. The Battersbys aren't my favourite characters, but the novelty factor made up for that. Overall, the storyline is quite funny. It's very predictable, but you'd expect that. The problem for me is just the sheer length. Although I appreciate it's advertised as a feature length film, there just doesn't seem to be enough content to spread out over 100+ minutes of footage. While I enjoyed the DVD overall and would recommend a Corrie fan to have a go, in my opinion the whole thing would have been better if it was shortened by about a third.

A rotten storyline, poorly realised secondary characters, indifferent acting, and what I find especially unforgiveable from Coronation Street, dialogue that sounds as though it was cobbled together in minutes. Avoid!

I really looked forward to this one but oh dear oh dear! Knew it was going to be different, but goodness me where was this idea dreamed up? A really weak story line with totally unbelieveable (and therefore not comic) situations. Sorry people just hope everyone concerned had a good holiday while making it...then everything wasn't a total waste of time. x
