I'm reviewing this set as an amateurish 'Corrie' fan who wishes to familiarize himself more with life on the cobbles. Having watched only a handful of episodes for nearly 4 years when I was studying in England during the mid-90s (brings back memories!), I now know a lot about the cosy 'Corrie' community watching these discs. Apart from episodes selected from each decade (the lack of plot continuity is regrettably, but understandably, unavoidable), the 'specials' are to be treasured especially for the well-edited footage within character introductions (such as 'The Stars', which I wish were arranged chronologically) and interviews (for example, 'Corrie Controversies' and 'The Street Undressed'). Even if you're not familiar with the situations involved, the extracted dialogues (alternating between the tragic, hilarious, and romantic) are simply brilliant (touching and funny scenes are sandwiched between fiery kisses and gory fisticuffs). Some of the 'specials' are mostly biographical: an in-depth view is given of the actors' real-life drama (domestic joys and sufferings), but with strong reference to their fictional roles in the series. The other 'specials' focus on various relationships, including the major 'Corrie' families (some scenes - for instance, the Tracy and Karen plots - recur in two or more 'specials', but they are hardly monotonous). The golden 12-DVD box has each disc in a separate case (the breaks between the parts of an episode are edited out without any sign of a clumsy jump from one part to another), but (alas) there is no booklet, not even a leaflet; however, the presence of English subtitles for the HOH - except for the short 'Celebs' and 'Best' extras - is a great asset (regional accents can sometimes be difficult to catch).Read more ›

I am so glad ITV has included subtitles. I have resisted getting Network's sets for the various decades precisely because they do not include subtitles. Even with hearing aids, I need subtitles; so thank you ITV. Like other reviewers here, I also hope you will issue composites for each decade, with subtitles, of course.

DVDs arrived within the week and were well protected by packaging. We have spent a lot of hours watching them and reminiscing about the characters and episodes, deciding whether we remember them or not. A comprehensive archive with plenty of variety.
Do not be tempted to buy 'The Stars of Coronation Street - 50 years, 50 classic characters' which comes up as a recommendation by Amazon - they are the first 5 videos in the collection!

Well having being brough this item for Christmas, i was suprised that the amount of "specials" in this boxset, where as i would hvae liked more episodes, for me "Bet Bails Out" was worth it for this episode alone, and it was a great one to see again. The first colour episode is another winner, to see all those gharish hospital curtains and blankets of the late 60's.Although some great episodes are included, i think there could have been a few more, which were not included in the 60's, 70's and 80's boxsets.

The good thing about specials is it does get a chance for new viewers to get to know the different familys, but i would have personally prefered to see more episodes, but still a good buy all the same, for Corrie fans old & new.

Being a massive fan of Coronation street to have a collection of best bits over it's fifty years is fantastic.
would have liked a lot more epesodes from the 90's and 00's though similar to the other coronation street box sets from 60's, 70's and 80's.
A great box of memories.

An excellent dvd collection if you're a Corrie fan, really enjoyable. Loads of memorable programme clips with profiles on families such as the MacDonalds and the Battersby's, as well as profiles on individual characters such as Ken Barlow and Jack Duckworth. Excellent viewing!

Released in 2010 to mark Coronation Street's 50th anniversary, ITV treated us with this mammoth 12 disc boxset.

The good:
1. 'The Stars of the Street' on disc 1 and 2 is a very enjoyable trip down memory lane. Former 'Corrie' girl Denise Welch presents a countdown of the 50 most important characters in the history of the show, with 4 clips of each one. All the legends are present and accounted for.
2. Some of the specials on disc 4 about key characters are fascinating. With 'Ken and Me', 'Jack and Bill', and 'Deirdre in Me', when are given an insight into the personal lives of William Roache, and the late William Tarmey and Deirdre Barlow. Also on the disc is the 'Goodbye Blanche' special, paying tribute to Corrie's most funniest battleaxe and the late Maggie Jones, the wonderful actress who portrayed her.
3. The choice of the '90s episodes on disc 10 is good, and all of them debuted on DVD at the time. Bet and Raquel drunk in the Rovers after hours, and Bet's 1995 departure especially is a real treat to be able to see again.

The not so good:
1. With all the decades, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, we are only given five episodes per disc, surely they could have fit more on! Most of the '60s to the '80s were already available on the Network boxsets anyway. However, as this is an official release with the so-called 'best' episodes, it is correct that they should have reappeared here.
2. The 'Exposing' episodes on disc 5 really aren't that necessary, how about 'fan's favourite episodes' or 'the funniest episodes' instead or something? These programmes are basically profiles of characters such as Peter Barlow and his sister Tracy. Hardly classic characters, did we really need these?
3.
