4.0 out of 5 stars It'll do the trick, 11 April 2010
This review is from: Devon, Cornwall and Southwest England (Lonely Planet Regional Guides) (Paperback)
Used this book for an intensive trip around Cornwall, so we covered a lot of ground. There are some strange problems with this book, like a couple towns have writeups or information, yet don't appear in the index which is annoying when you're deciding whether to jump off the train or not. The are almost no maps of anywhere in Cornwall (though maybe the other counties are okay?). But the advice is sincere and personal and gives little tidbits about the place. Definitely recommended.

Great guide. Designed to help you find the things you want to find, without colour photos... although it would be nice to actually see where you going :/

5.0 out of 5 stars Super southwest guidebook, 3 April 2010
This review is from: Devon, Cornwall and Southwest England (Lonely Planet Regional Guides) (Paperback)
This is an absolutely cracking little guidebook, packed with information on practically every corner of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, as well as Bristol (though sadly not Wiltshire).

It's got lots of tips on everything from the best beaches to recommended restaurants and top sleeps, all covered with the usual level of research you'd expect from Lonely Planet. There are some great factual boxes in there as well - including great ones on Somerset willow and Bristol's slave trade.

I find the previous reviewer's comments rather bizarre to be honest - the book is written in a lively, engaging style with plenty of humour, a long way from the dry and dusty tone of most other British guidebooks. Personally I'd buy a Lonely Planet book over a Michelin any day of the week (although I do like Sawdays books as well).

If you're looking for a guidebook to make the most of your southwest holiday, buy this - you won't be disappointed.
