I worked through this book from cover to cover on my own and passed the Cornish Language Board's first grade examination with flying colours. I expected to take about twelve months to complete the course but found it so compelling I couldn't put it down - working late into the night on a regular basis! In the event, I took about eight or nine months to work through it, making my own notes as I went. It's wonderful, and makes the complexities of the language more accessible than other courses I have looked at. It is truly enjoyable. The line drawings support the text brilliantly, as well as aiding memory. I fell into the habit of shading them in with highlighters at the end of every session to help consolidate what I had just learned and to wind down before bed!

As with any language learning, it is better to find a 'study buddy' to practise with if you can. Finding a more experienced learner to help explain the trickier bits would also help, as well as listening to the CDs (you won't pass the oral part of the exam without listening to the CDs) which can be bought separately. Cornish language classes are held across Cornwall, as well, for anyone finding it difficult to stick to a solitary study plan. However you organize your language-learning, you cannot go wrong with this book at the heart of your studies. Obviously, there is no requirement to sit an exam at the end but doing so is an excellent way of measuring your progress. Ken George's dictionary 'An Gerlyver Kres' becomes a useful addition to your studies as you progress, although the book itself provides ample vocabulary with English equivalents.

The book covers a little more than First Grade material, so by following it to the end, the learner gets a head start with Grade Two.

This book will get you through a basic examination in Kernewek Kemmyn and will enable anyone who uses it seriously to start chatting in basic Cornish. It deals very effectively with the grammar of the language and adds a large store of vocabulary.
The CD works very well in partnership with the book. I recommend without hesitation.
If and when Cornish comes to be taught in all primary and secondary schools in the Duchy, then educators could do a lot worse than to select this book. That option may, however, be compromised by the recent agreement on unified standard spelling, and the book may have to be updated accordingly.
