A great book will transport you to another world... literally, if you're not careful.

On a gloomy Thursday afternoon, Max Bloom enters his local library in a last ditch attempt to stave off an epic case of teenage boredom. Among the hushed stacks he discovers The Cornerstone, an ancient book tucked away on a dusty, forgotten shelf. Opening the cover, Max is instantly transported to an alternate dimension full of things intent on killing him - thus avoiding boredom with remarkable success.
He meets a beautiful girl called Merelie (brilliant), who tells him he could be a Wordsmith, a sorcerer able to craft magic from the written word itself, one strong enough to save both their worlds from the Dwellers - hideous monsters from beyond the universe (not so brilliant).
This all sounds completely unbelievable. The kind of thing you'd read in a fantasy novel. But The Cornerstone doesn't lie... and the danger is very real.
In a world threatened by monsters, where books are worshipped and powerful magic exists, Max Bloom must make a choice: close The Cornerstone and run home - or trust Merelie, become a Wordsmith, and save two worlds from certain destruction...

85000 words long and an Amazon best seller, The Cornerstone is a funny, fast-paced modern fantasy for all ages.

Reviews:

"A rip-roaring rollercoaster of a fantasy." - Stephen Leather, best selling author
"A master story-teller... instinctively knows the right buttons to press." - Neil Marr, editor in chief, BeWrite Books
"A quite brilliant humorous urban fantasy novel. This book is worth nothing less than the full five stars. It hit my sense of humour pretty much on the head, the story itself was very nicely told indeed and the Kindle presentation is nothing short of exceptional. I for one would most certainly buy a sequel if he decides to write one!" - Shaun Horrigan, Amazon Top 100 Reviewer
"The book is really well written, and I'm sorry that I finished it. I'll keep my eyes open for more of this from the author. I would definitely recommend this book." - Amazon Vine Voice Reviewer
"The plot's many twists and turns meant I couldn't put it down, desperately wanting to know what would happen next. If you read one book this year, make it The Cornerstone." - Amazon Reviewer

Max Bloom is a typical teenager. Bored with everything and bored with being bored, Max decides as a last resort to enter the local library. This one decision is about to change his life forever. Finding a hidden note that leads to a magical book known as The Cornerstone, Max is transported to a parallel universe where they expect him to be a superhero.

This is Nick Spalding's third book, but his first real work of fiction and it is a quite brilliant humorous urban fantasy novel. The humour is exactly to my liking being fairly gentle and easy going rather than being totally "in your face". The fantasy part of the story is particularly well done too. You can see Nick's love of books coming through in his storytelling with a book being a literal as well as a metaphorical doorway into another universe and with words having real power when shaped by a Wordsmith.

Nick is also a regular contributor on the Kindle discussion pages here on Amazon and his love of the Kindle shows through in the care he has taken in the presentation of this book. If a publishing house wanted to see an example of how to present a book in Kindle format, this would be the perfect example. Formatting is exceptionally good, all the small details are right, for example, new chapters start on a new page, bold and italic fonts are used for emphasis, but are not overused, there is a good cover picture and a table of contents.

The story is quite long at almost 6300 Kindle locations and took me a couple of evenings and most of a weekend to read and I consider that to be time very well spent indeed. There is also a brief afterword from the author where he talks about where he got the idea for the story from and teases us with the possibility of a follow up. I always appreciate hearing about the author's thought process and feel it adds a lot to a book.

Overall: This book is worth nothing less than the full five stars. It hit my sense of humour pretty much on the head, the story itself was very nicely told indeed and the Kindle presentation is nothing short of exceptional. I for one would most certainly buy a sequel if he decides to write one!

Very Entertaining 9 Mar 2012

Now with this book Nick Spalding has hit upon a winning combination.

A book that allows you to travel to parallel dimensions, and a great lead character who treats a lot of what happens to him with the sort of attitude you would expect from a teenager thrown into a situation he was not really happy to be a part of.

There's definitely a way forward from this book into a whole series of books based around the ability to transport yourself into those other dimensions, and if the writing in further books is as funny/effotless as this, and can find the right hook to get you engrossed then I will be reading them for a long time.

This is Nick Spalding at his best, and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks

This book is a great read for a 10+ boy (or girl). The star of the story is a wise cracking teen with his mind on the pretty heroine, who is drawn into a world of books (quite literally) which is quite a surprise for him as he usually spends his time annoying his younger sister or playing computer games.
I really enjoyed this book and it made me laugh out loud more than once - and I'm a 40+ mum.

Words can't describe how awful this is. Deleted from kindle after 5 pages of smug self indulgent attempts at humour. Really don't bother.

Good read
Thoroughly enjoyed this story, well written with plenty of excitement from a typical teenagers perspective. Plenty of humor but not to the detriment of the story line.
