Biography

Cornershop are as The Times and most major papers have put it, 'the most treasured of British institutions,' yet they are amazingly one of the most neglected institutions England has ever known too. Not for them to be merely a pigeon hole in the staff room, they always cut it their own way, constantly changing with every release, burning Morrissey pictures outside EMI to deliver a message that all… Read more in Amazon's Cornershop Store

The Double 'O' Groove Of is a one-off gem of an album. It successfully blends Punjabi folk style lyrics with an array of different musical styles & instruments - my favourite being 'Double Decker Eyelashes' which includes a harpsichord! Random - yes, but it's really well produced and am pleased to say it works!! The album was the soundtrack to my 2011 summer. The tracks still warm me up in the cold months too. Go out and get this, you won't be disappointed!

Fun Beyond Fusion 17 Mar 2011
By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Oh! This is lovely. Really, really lovely and light as air!
Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayers are back with a truly delightful
collection of songs recorded with the allegedly unknown Punjabi
singer Bubbley Kaur whose voice really is as pretty as her name.

The mood of the album is gentle, whimsical and full of strong
melodies and catchy beats. There are ten tracks in the collection,
all sung in Punjabi by Ms Kaur with fresh-voiced enthusiasm.
I worried that my complete lack of understanding of the language
might hamper my enjoyment but I was so immediately absorbed by
the tunes and gently lilting cadences that any anxiety was quickly
swept away by the easy accessibility and charm of the music.

The marriage of Indian compositional form and percussion to a breezy
Western pop ambience is entirely successful. This stuff is beyond
fusion; it is organic, sonically cohesive and a big bundle of fun!

Top tracks would have to include 'Topknot', a kind of jaunty hoedown
with its slippery instrumental and percussive accompaniment; 'The 911
Curry', which whips up a storm of brass studded mayhem over a complex
polyrhythmic tabla pattern and a beautifully simple folksy vocal
performance from Ms Kaur; 'Double Decker Eyelashes' (loving the title!)
with its curious neo-classical keyboard decorations and four-square bass
and the irrisistably raucous funk of 'Supercomputed'. Heck! It's all good!

Cornershop deserve pats on the back and big claps for this little leftfield
marvel. It is one of the most refreshing recordings of the year so-far.

Highly Recommended.

I really like Tracks 2 and 8 - definite favourites. The rest I could get along without. Track 10 has plenty of energy, but the lyrics are very repetitive, almost like a mantra and if you are not in the mood then it can get irritating - this track reminded me slightly of Ravi Shankar's collaboration with George Harrison on sanskrit chants.
Track 2 is really groovy, sort of in the vein of Nightmares on Wax mid-2000s work.
Favourite is definitely Track 8 - they've sampled some interesting horns and stringed instruments in there, which from time to time sound like a medieval madrigal, with Bubbly Kaur on top!
Enjoy the parts that you like.
