Yummy, 16 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Corned Beef Sandwich (Paperback)
Completely readable and funny, Corned Beef Sandwich is as tasty as its title. It's a great read for that terrible coach ride from London to Edinburgh and kept me guessing throughout. Less of a crime novel more comic fiction. I'm off to buy some goldfish.

The goldfish, it's about the goldfish, stupid, 28 Oct 2005
This review is from: Corned Beef Sandwich (Paperback)
The unnamed character at the centre of this story works in a rundown prole bookies in south central Manchester. After an unnerving armed hold-up our heroine discovers she) has handed over her own bag to the gunman, containing the halal corned beef sandwich, lip balm etc. and in return has been landed with a bag stuffed full of money. Needless to say certain parties are very eager to trace the missing money and are on the heels of the bookies clerk. House mates ex- Californian surf god Axel, exuberant Geordie Sheena and flash, entrepreneur Theo (who also happens to be X's brother) are inevitably drawn into the ensuing frantic chaos. While X tries to figure out a way of staying alive, he takes comfort from his precious fishes: Judas, Satan, Lorraine, Little Kurt and Tankgirl. A bright and funny crime caper with plenty of chuckles and strong on the seesawing relationships of the characters. An enjoyable first novel from a very promising writer.

Reservoir Goldfish, 18 Mar 2011
This review is from: Corned Beef Sandwich (Paperback)
If Donald Westlake had been born in Manchester and listened to Marilyn Manson, he could well have written this book. Take a goth assistant in a run-down bookmaker's, a bag of stolen money, a halal corned beef sandwich and an aquarium full of oddly named goldfish; mix them all up with a good dollop of humour, a smattering of romance and some decidedly dodgy characters. Then stand back and watch the sparks fly. The main premise of the book is simple - a hold-up gone wrong, the wrong person ends up with the loot and the baddies want it back. The result is an endearing romp which could easily be renamed Reservoir Goldfish.
The voice of the main character is completely original, the writing is casually stylish and Mark Sullivan writes in a really playful way. Corned Beef Sandwich is a comedy crime thriller where the crime is incidental, the thrills are Manchester home video rather than Hollywood blockbuster, and the comedy is understated and effortless. This is a really good read - completely original, charmingly scruffy and it has that real feelgood factor. It's also the only time I've ever found corned beef appealing.
