As a debut I was expecting similar to Stuart Macbride etc where the focus is on the police characters and their exploits. As other reviews point out, this is more about old rituals that are being kept alive in a small village. I think I was disapointed because I wanted more of the police side than the pagan side. It was still a good book but if you like the S.Macbride and Mark Billingham type of reads then you might not be too excited about this book. I will read his other books to see if they change direction a bit. I agree with other reivews that mention the unrealistic setting - you always got the impression you were deep in the wilds! The characters weren't developed enough so you couldn't really feel for them which is a shame. Hopefully the books after this one build on that a bit more.

Wonderfully written first novel from Patrick Lennon. A classic tale of revenge with a refreshing new spin. Can't wait to see what happens next to Tom Fletcher.

This book seems like a conventional British police-based thriller at first - we get an interesting DI getting enmeshed in a series of murders in a rural Cambridgeshire village. Within a few pages it's clear this is an extrememly unusual book: the police story gets entwined with ancient pagan rituals, the Russian army, the winter of discontent and people who think they're still fighting a war that goes back a thousand yesrs. What this writer does so well is to keep all this steaming along at high speed while still making you care deeply about the characters. It's a page-turner but with amazingly atmpospheric settings and characters that really stay in the mind. A brilliant series start.
