Book Description

30 Jun 2004
Corfu Banquet celebrates the tastes, smells and colours of an island where the cooking is seasonal and the flowers play changes on the theme of a year-round spring. An island where life follows the sea; from an icy turquoise in March, through autumn's olive darkness when mourga, (the mush of discarded olive skins from the village press) clouds the water to a claret wine, as winter sets in. A memoir in the rhythm of the five seasons of Corfu, the story tells of the house of Rovinia, built in the sixties by Emma Tennant's parents and of Maria, the 'spirit of the house', her knowledge and wisdom. Corfu Banquet entwines recipes and original photographs with fond recollections in prose. This is a sensuous experience, like pinching the basil that grows in great pots at the back door or tasting the pale pink of the homemade fragole ice cream.

4.0 out of 5 stars Corfu Banquet 26 July 2003
This was a book bought in anticipation of a holiday in Corfu. It could not have done more to make me wish we were going tomorrow! It is a truly evocative piece, where you can 'see' every sight, 'smell' every smell and 'taste' every taste. The book is written as though explaining to friends every detail of a much loved landscape, the walks , the history and the local characters! I can't wait to try 'Marias' recipes for myself and wish we grew the pungent Corfiote oregano here. Peppered with local knowledge and phrases, this book helps you to understand a bit about the culture of this beautiful island. The book is only let down by it's size, I wanted to read more, and the rather disappointing ending, it drifted to a close rather than having a definate ending and I found it left me with unanswered questions, did they sell the house?!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book 17 Mar 2013
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
This is just the sort of travel book/memoir I love. It is simply told, very personal, and quite quirky. I love the presentation of the island through the changing seasons of the year, the personal stories of the lives of the people the author lives and comes into contact with, and most of all, the recipes. I do like a book with recipes in, and there are some corkers in here. Part of travelling to different countries to me is trying new foods and flavours, and holiday memories are as much about tastes as experiences. The food the writer describes so vividly reminded me of past holidays on Greek Islands and the wonderful tastes and flavours that shaped my time there. A lovely, simple book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes me back! 20 Aug 2007
I must have spent at least a year on this fabulous island - around 12 trips over time. Wonderful to finally read about the REAL people and the REAL food - and not the usual tourist gunk. I used to know Tim (Emma's partner) way back in the 70s; now they've finally sold up, I hope they'll still be returning - as will I!
