Product Description

It may seem surprising: can 10 discs really contain all of Arcangelo Corelli's output? They can, and do, but the surprise is merited, for the influence and reputation of these works far outstrips their quantity (and how often can one say that of a Baroque composer!). On display here is the apogee of Baroque form as displayed in the genres of Solo Sonatas, Trio Sonatas and Concerti Grossi, full of sparkling virtuosity and an intimate knowledge and love of the violin and its potential as a solo instrument. The influence was felt most immediately in Rome, where he was based for his adult life, but publication of these collections soon earned him a name across Europe, as much as his prowess as a solo violinist did; for this was the golden age of the composer as creator, when composition went hand in hand with performance. Of course there is plenty more music Corelli composed which hasn't survived, or at least not on manuscripts with his name on them, for Corelli as an impresario frequently staged oratorios to which he would have contributed sinfonias and instrumental numbers. What survives is never less than highly polished; often bold, and continually inventive, as is more than evident in these performances from a welcome and uniform perspective by a leading Dutch period-instrument ensemble. And it s unique; there is no other Corelli box on the market, nor has such a project ever been attempted before or since.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Baroque Splendour 26 May 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It is a good example of baroque playing clear and concise. The variations on the Violin sonatas including lute and cello/de gamba make for much more interesting listening. All concertos and trios are well played and very listenable. Brilliant for the price well recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Corelli's complete lifetime works (re-release) 26 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
This 10 disc box set on the Brilliant Classics label is a welcome re-release of the original set (catalogue no. 92403)Corelli: Complete Works. It is identical in all but the box cover picture.

My review of the original release:

Arcangelo Corelli, less heard until recently than his contemporaries such as Purcell and (Alessandro) Scarlatti, was one of the major influences of instrumental music during the Baroque years from 1680 to 1710. He was one of the most widely performed composers of his time and his popularity and fame as a violinist, violin teacher and composer extended long after his death in 1713, which was against the trend of the late Baroque era where many names tended to fade into obscurity for several generations after their death.

Noted not only for his violin playing skills, but also the contribution he made to the playing technique and subsequent acceptance of this newly-developed instrument over the more commonly used viola. For one who is so successfully associated with the instrument it is interesting however that he used only a limited part of its scale, preferring not to play above D on the highest string. This led to the story, which is amusing even if not entirely factual, that Corelli refused to play a passage in Handel's oratorio `il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno' because it extended above the note D, and took great offence when Handel himself proceeded to play the part.

He also influenced the writings of the younger rising stars such as Couperin, Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach and Handel, where he pioneered styles that were subsequently developed by these names.
