Fine recording 16 July 2005
By Leslie Richford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
My personal award for the best-ever recording of Corelli concerti grossi goes to Jeanne Lamon and the Tafelmusik Ensemble from Canada, but unfortunately they only ever recorded a selection of six of the twelve concerti (for BMG on their Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label). But possibly next down the list comes the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra directed by Nicholas McGegan with a very clean, well-recorded issue that allows you to hear the interplay of the violins and other instruments very clearly. The playing appears occasionally to be a little mannered, and I am not sure that the tempi are always what Corelli envisioned (I think McGegan tends to play a little too fast), but on the whole this is a fine recording (that was available at a much more expensive price for a number of years before it was re-released at the Classical Express price).

Spectacular recording, spectacular price 10 April 2008
By John Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
To hear this recording of the Corelli concerti for the first time is eye opening. The clarity is unsurpassed by any orchestral recording I have ever heard. I have had the experience several times, of putting this (or its companion disc II) on with people visiting, and soon the conversation ends, and they say, "what IS that you just put on?" The other reviewer says at times it is "mannered". Corelli is said to have insisted that all players bow their parts in unison, so I think for it to sound "mannered" is what he was seeking. There are places on this disc where you would consider that perhaps this is a contemporary "fusion" piece rather than something written 300 years ago. This orchestra also does a spectacular job with The Messiah and Water Music and M's Horn Concerti. At this price, these discs should be in everyone's collection

Baroque Brilliance...For What It's Worth 31 Jan 2009
By Moldyoldie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Unlike the often turgid concoctions of Telemann or another go-round with Bach or Vivaldi, these delightful works dating from the late-17th/early-18th century make for smoother sonic wallpaper and caress the ears with sweet but substantive melody. Arcangelo Corelli wrote and performed his series of Op. 6 Concerti Grossi over a period of twenty years until the time of his death, but they weren't published until the year following. These recordings by the San Francisco-based period instruments ensemble called the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra date from 1989-90 and are as fetching as any available.
