Amazon Review

CorelDRAW 9 is a mature and complex graphics program. Foster D. Coburn III and Peter McCormick's CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is a detailed volume aimed at designers on how to get the best out it. They discuss text, blends, transparency, customisation, scripting, effects, importing, outputting, object and page management. They even reveal CorelDRAW 9's ability to create and output post-script and true-type fonts. Their style is informative and straightforward and the text's generously illustrated throughout with screen grabs. There's a even colour section showing off award winning artwork. The accompanying CD-ROM carries project files used in the book for hands-on experience as well as utilities and demos.

CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is broad rather than deep and covers a lot in 875 pages. It would have been better if the hood on CorelDRAW 9 had really been lifted and its inner workings displayed since what professionals need to know is how it inter-operates with the ubiquitous PostScript. The new option to export to Adobe Acrobat's PDF does get its own chapter but it's a little light on technical details.

Unlike some other books, this one covers only CorelDRAW 9 itself and not the whole suite, which confusingly shares the same name. If you're also interested in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 you will have to buy Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 The Official Guide separately. Ultimately though CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is simply the best guide available. Even the Corel Corporation think so--they've endorsed it. --John Cranmer

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to help and inspire 22 Dec 2000
Format:Paperback
As an amateur designer I have found this book both informative, helpfull and inspiring. There is so much on the corel draw 9 programme and it would take forever to learn it all. This book is very easy to read and understand, and is split into managable sections, which make using it a breeze. It is just as usefull to use to look up something specific, as well as reading front to back, and picking up techniques, hints and tips, and inspiration along the way.
A very good book, to take you from the very basics, right through to very complex technical drawing. A fantastic companion to the programme itself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding knowledge of Subject and Superb teaching skills! 26 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Foster's CD9 book is an example of what can be accomplished by a "first rate" teacher who is second to none in thoroughly knowing his subject matter. Although CD9 is not a simple graphics program Foster and Pete have the graphics and teaching skills to make it a book I would recommend to anyone interested in the field of graphics ..beginner or otherwise. They took "No" shortcuts where quality is concerned. I read there cd8 book and yet still find there cd9 book worth every cent I paid for it. It covers not only how to use every tool but equally important what you "can do with the tool" artistically. In summary Pete and Foster want you to enjoy the program and they use every resource available in there book to accomplish this....And I believe they have succeeded!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger is Better 4 Feb 2000
By Judith R Simpson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When I got this book, I was totally overwhelmed. It's only 1400 pages. I am new to Corel but this book brought me up to speed quickly. Just the CD ROM that is included with this book is worth the price alone. Alot of the book is still a mystery to me. The only problem with Corel is that when you start doing graphics you soon find out that there are no limitations to what you can do. Is this good or bad? If you can't make a choice of beautiful graphics, you are in for long nights fretting and many hours of wringing your hands. I rate this book from beginner to advanced. A must have.

I had spent many hours working with the CorelDraw program, and was very frustrated.

This book is written well, and is easy to follow or use as a reference guide. I would suggest it for anyone whom has more complicated tasks to accomplish on CorelDraw. My only regret is that I did not think to buy it sooner!
