    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've been using Painter since version 1, and in those days it came in an actual paint tin. It's always been quite a quirky tool, aimed squarely at artists and illustrators who were already pretty competent in their respective crafts.
Painter will not make you in to a digital artist - you need to know your medium already, or be prepared to learn its digital equivalent. Although Painter has hundreds of brushes, you will in reality only use a few depending on if you're a watercolour, acrylic, gouache or spray paint artist - or oil, crayon, pastel, you name it. The temptation is to try out every brush but you really need to stick within what you know. Which isn't to say you can't experiment. I tend to use acrylics and sprays with pencils, but the style that comes out is similar to what I'd do with "real" paints.

Painter comes in a hardback book which serves as both a manual and a showcase of other artists' work. These provide some idea of what the software can help you to do but as I hinted above, you have to bring the talent. This isn't Photoshop where a lot of the legwork is done for you and you simply need to know how to use the different filters. With Painter you are the artist, the software is just your tool. Learning to use Painter well takes a LOT of practice and patience but the program is very good at faithfully reproducing the quirks of each medium. It's quite spooky actually.
Having said that, Painter works well with other tools like Photoshop, which is a far cry from the early days. Layers, filters, lots of export options and, one of my favourite features, automatic recording of your strokes. This has lots of practical uses, I'm sure, but if you grew up with Paint With Nancy or Tony Hart then you'll probably get a kick out of pressing play and watching your painting appear stroke by stroke on the screen :)

One more thing: you need a graphics tablet. Don't even think of using a mouse with this. I have a small Wacom tablet WACOM Graphic tablet - Bamboo Pen Graphics Tablet which is fine for the sort of stuff I do, but you might want to invest in something bigger (if you've never used a tablet before, give it time and before long you'll wonder how you coped without one). Avoid any tablets that aren't pressure sensitive.

By Martin A Hogan HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
This is my first Corel Painter software and although I have loved painting with oils and watercolors (which is a tough medium for me); I really wanted to see what digital offerings this program had. It downloads quickly and comes with a thorough hardcover 112 page manual. The Menu bar setup is confusing at first, but if you've used any program like Windows Media or Paint, you'll catch on. The Menu bar gives you all the pull down options, a Brush Selector bar, Property bar, Recent brushes bar, Navigator panel, Layers panel, Channels panel, Mixed pad panel, Papers panel, Paper Libraries panel, Toolbox, Brush library panel, Temporal Color palette and Canvas. This sounds like a lot, but they are all described in detail for each use.

The Basics section tells you how to create documents, from a blank canvas with options to change document size, resolution type, color of the canvas and texture of the canvas. Corel advises you to start with a photo to transform it into a painting. You can place brush strokes on `layers', meaning you can protect the canvas from an unwanted changes. Remember this is all digital. If you are fond of watercolor or Liquid ink, you can only use one layer unfortunately. However, the watercolor option is very cool, with the color bleeding into the `digital' water, which you can easily control. The mimicking of real paint is remarkable. Mirror and Kaleidoscope painting modes are fun.

The selection, management and creation of brushes are full of possibilities and options. Some of the categories include acrylics, airbrushes, chalk, crayons charcoal, watercolor erasers (these allow you to darken or lighten colors) F/X, Gel, Gouache (combination of watercolors and acrylics - a nice mixed media option), oils, pencil, pens, markers, and on and on.

I found setting up a `rough sketch' was fun, always allowing you to add color, texture while zooming in on certain areas. When you take a break, all your work is easily stored and easily retrieved. The final results can be as detailed or loose as you want. There are examples in the book that show everything from cartoons, to Andrew Wyeth detail to Norman Rockwell precision. Don't be intimidated by these. Your own creativity can be found by experimenting with your favorite topic. Although digital can never replace to true color, texture and warmth a real piece of artwork contains, it sure comes close and this program allows you to get your `design on' for further creativity. I don't see this as a replacement at all - it's a valuable tool for practicing your intuitive talents on a computer. I truly never thought I'd see the day when such precision could be had digitally.

I do want to add that this works best on a computer with high RAM, processing and storage capabilities and the price is a bit high, but I imagine that will come down soon.

    Artistic Licence 7 July 2011
    By L. A. Hardy VINE™ VOICE
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It had been a long time since I'd used any Corel software; fifteen years, in fact. Since then, the places I've worked have used Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, so I was very interested to see just how much Corel had come on since my first fumblings with Draw.

Before the disc even made it into the computer, first impressions were very good. As you might hope from a graphics package, the presentation is gorgeous. It comes with a beautifully produced, hard-backed starter guide containing all you need to get yourself going with the software and a gallery of artists' work to inspire you. There are also two tutorials in the back, with professional artists taking you through their creative process using Painter 12. The disc itself is neatly contained inside the front cover.

Once you've installed the software, it's very intuitive to use if you have any experience with other graphics packages. As this package simulates actual art media, those with real-world artistic experience will probably get more out of this than newcomers. However, there are some useful photo-manipulation tools that will allow complete novices to create interesting artwork from digital images. Even if you don't have any experience, the basic drawing and colouring tools are great fun to play with while you develop your skills and confidence. After that, it's really up to you where you want to go with the extensive toolkit available.

Some of the more complex brushes and workspaces (specially customised tool layouts) did tend to tax our aging laptop, but the software in general works well even at the lower end of the manufacturer's specification.

Whilst this is undoubtedly aimed at the professional artist, it still has a great deal to offer the interested amateur.
