1.0 out of 5 stars A big thank you 12 Dec 2010
Many thanks to the reviewers who spotted the unreasonable terms and conditions. I have used Paintshop through many editions and have been very satisfied but I would not buy this version until I see the terms and conditions have changed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Outrageous license conditions 2 May 2010
We have all had to get used to one sided licences which allow software providers to avoid any responsibility for anything. But the licence for Paintshop Pro is the worst I have ever seen - it's so bad that no sensible user would agree to it. Corel requires you to hand over control of your computer and your personal information to them.
Corel is entitled to:
- install updates without giving the user any notice
- define some updates as 'mandatory updates' and revoke the user's licence if they are not installed within ten days
- monitor how you use the product and to share that information with anybody they feel like
- share your personal information with anybody they feel like
- access, utilise and alter the "existing functionality" of your computer, including changing any default settings they choose to.
I have used Paintshop Pro through five or six versions and been very happy with it. But these conditions go far beyond what is acceptable or necessary. I am not going to install this version. Nobody who values their personal privacy and wants to stay in control of their computer should do so either.

I've used Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for a while and thought that X3 might be a worthwhile upgrade, especially with features like the Object Remover, which seems much easier to use than the magic wand. I decided to download the trial version before committing to it and I'm glad I did.

However: it seems to me that in the new version Corel have got above themselves, and released a buggy and unreliable system, together with (as another user noted) quite outrageous license conditions.

What really annoyed me was that the installation immediately made the Corel Instant Viewer the default tool to open my JPG image files. This might have been excusable if Instant Viewer was a good application - however it is hopeless - as far as I can tell if offers less functionality than the standard Windows 7 viewer, but I have not even been able to evaluate it properly as it is hopelessly unstable and crashes and hangs at the drop of a hat. It is slow transitioning between images in the same folder, and moreover, each time I try to close it (click red cross on top right of window title bar), the application freezes & will not respond to anything, requiring the Windows Task manager to close it down. I found the same problem described on a Corel users' forum & there appear to be no fixes for an essentially non-functional application suggested on this forum except to go and change back the file associations.

In short the viewer is a bug-ridden heap of junk. This does not exactly bode well for the rest of the software which is required to do much more complex things than just being a file viewer.

It was also promised that the new version was much faster, having enhanced support for multi-threading and multi-processor systems.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing upgrade, repeatedly crashes 9 Oct 2010
By RogerR
Verified Purchase
I can't fault the purchasing part - it arrived in good time, and well-packaged.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that there appear to be a number of glitches in the program - the display doesn't fit the screen properly when maximised, for instance. Users of the earlier version will also find that a couple of useful tools have gone.
But the reason I purchased it was for the ability to handle Nikon NEF files. These are a type of RAW file produced by digital cameras, and although the previous version claimed to support them, this was very limited. Well, other software houses might have issued a patch to support more recent file types, but OK, I thought, the upgrade is not cripplingly expensive.
Sadly, although it can open NEF files, in the case of those in my version (Nikon D5000), that doesn't turn out to be the case.Oh, they open, but as soon as you try to do any editing, the program crashes. Every time! All you can do is immediately save as a jpg, or convert them beforehand. Which I could do anyway, with free Nikon software: so the advantages of the NEF format are therefore lost.
I finished the first version of this review on a slightly positive note. Sadly, I've had to revise that to a negative one. The day after installation, Corel downloaded a "patch". This rendered the program unusable. It crashed when performing simple photo augmentation tasks (on jpg files), on a depressingly regular basis.
I cannot recommend the software: a pity, as earlier versions had a lot of plus points.

1.0 out of 5 stars potentially good but... 28 Dec 2010
By alfpics
I had an earlier trial version of this product which had left all-sorts of stuff on the PC when I uninstalled it. When trying to install the licensed version, it took about 30minutes and then told me that a version was already installed so it couldn't complete. I could not uninstall old version using 'Add/Remove' programmes as the programme didn't show, nor would the tools available from Corel help. (In fact their support were not at all helpful) From the Corel user forum, there was some extra help which required editing the registry to remove old Corel/ PaintShopPro items. Still would not install for same reason as above. In the end I spent hours removing about 1400 lines of code from the registry.

Eventually it installed and worked well - however I then tried to install the media project creator software that came with it, and it would not install - it couldn't find some file it needed. Additionally it seemed to corrupt the main programme so that it would no longer recognise RAW files. I have just completely removed it and wondering whether to use it or not! I understand some have found it great and no trouble - sadly that has not been my experience!
