We have all had to get used to one sided licences which allow software providers to avoid any responsibility for anything. But the licence for Paintshop Pro is the worst I have ever seen - it's so bad that no sensible user would agree to it. Corel requires you to hand over control of your computer and your personal information to them.
Corel is entitled to:
- install updates without giving the user any notice
- define some updates as 'mandatory updates' and revoke the user's licence if they are not installed within ten days
- monitor how you use the product and to share that information with anybody they feel like
- share your personal information with anybody they feel like
- access, utilise and alter the "existing functionality" of your computer, including changing any default settings they choose to.
I have used Paintshop Pro through five or six versions and been very happy with it. But these conditions go far beyond what is acceptable or necessary. I am not going to install this version. Nobody who values their personal privacy and wants to stay in control of their computer should do so either.

I've used Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for a while and thought that X3 might be a worthwhile upgrade, especially with features like the Object Remover, which seems much easier to use than the magic wand. I decided to download the trial version before committing to it and I'm glad I did.
However: it seems to me that in the new version Corel have got above themselves, and released a buggy and unreliable system, together with (as another user noted) quite outrageous license conditions.
What really annoyed me was that the installation immediately made the Corel Instant Viewer the default tool to open my JPG image files. This might have been excusable if Instant Viewer was a good application - however it is hopeless - as far as I can tell if offers less functionality than the standard Windows 7 viewer, but I have not even been able to evaluate it properly as it is hopelessly unstable and crashes and hangs at the drop of a hat. It is slow transitioning between images in the same folder, and moreover, each time I try to close it (click red cross on top right of window title bar), the application freezes & will not respond to anything, requiring the Windows Task manager to close it down. I found the same problem described on a Corel users' forum & there appear to be no fixes for an essentially non-functional application suggested on this forum except to go and change back the file associations.
In short the viewer is a bug-ridden heap of junk. This does not exactly bode well for the rest of the software which is required to do much more complex things than just being a file viewer.
It was also promised that the new version was much faster, having enhanced support for multi-threading and multi-processor systems. I have a Dell XPS with a quad core I7 processor, but during lengthy processing operations I saw no evidence that it was faster than the previous version, or indeed (using task manager) that it was using more than one of the four processors. In certain cases it seemed slower than X2.
Just hoping I can uninstall the trial version cleanly ...
PS just also found numerous other instabilities. For example when you try and save an image to JPG for some reason and only sometimes it refuses to save saying another process is editing the file, when it is not. You have to save under a new name using Save As. When you look at the original you find it is a file of zero size. Also I had a crash during the "vibrancy" dialog ("Pure virtual function call" - this is a C++ programming error that evidently wasn't tested). And I also had a complete freeze of the program during the one step noise removal.
This is a bug-ridden pile of garbage. Don't buy it until at least Corel roll out a comprehensive service pack to fix the pathological instability (I'm running on a new, clean system with Windows 7 (64 bit version) installed). I've 6GB of ram.

I also bought this software believing it would be a good investment as the price was reduced and was an upgrade to XL which I have used for a long time. What a mistake, wish I had read the reviews first because everything I have read after the effect has happened to me. What I don't understand is why Amazon is still selling it and have not pulled the plug on it until Corel have done something to resolve these issues. I have lost confidence in both. All I can say to anyone wanting to buy this product is to wait until they know for sure all the problems have been resolved.
