Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The reviewers before me have done a great job of listing the components and functionality, so I won't repeat any of that. These very postive reviews here give you one side...which makes me think that I've been sent a totally different set of software! This package has delivered a pretty frustrating experience to me, frankly.

So I'll give you the other side. I've experienced lots of very strange happenings since using this package. It feels very buggy to me. Let me list some of the oddities and annoyances:

- it installed quite efficiently on Windows 7, but takes 4GB of harddrive, which seems excessive, so make sure you have enough space.

- there are no real ways of changing the options. Fair enough I suppose: it's a package for the average non-techie person to dive into and use. But why can't I even set default folders for saving, etc?

- nor can I select the folders to be used in PaintShop Photo. It just automatically picks them up from wherever it deems is appropriate.

- I selected one photo to edit in PaintShop Photo, and as I was applying changes, it started flicking randomly between several other photos. Even standing back from the computer, making sure I wasn't touching anything, didn't stop this. I had to quit back to the folder view to stop it.

- VideoStudio just hangs forever if I try and load a .mov file into it. Even one that's 15 seconds long. I have no way of closing the crashed window except through the WindowsTask Manager.

- WinDVD tells me "there is no appropriate media" in a folder full of .mov files that I pointed it to, yet I could open that folder in Windows Explorer and drag the video into WinDVD to play it.

- and to top it all off, the interface is just clunky. I have a new, high spec dual core machine with 4GB of RAM and Windows 7, and the applications open jerkily, animated transitions between areas of functionality are not smooth, and the round 'waiting' symbol was hanging around all too frequently.

Overall, I have generally loathed this package as it feels like it's wasted hours of my time. When it has worked, it's been adequate, but I will go back to Picasa (free) and Paint Shop Pro X2 (old and cheap), and keep on looking for a decent mid-level video editting package.

Perhaps it just didn't gel with my computer set-up? Everyone else seems to have had a great experience, so just hope you don't get unlucky like me. :) Even typing that, I started doubting myself, so I rebooted my computer, waited for everything to stop loading up, started PaintShop Photo (took 12 seconds to present the folders view), selected a photo to open and...it crashed. *sigh*

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Digital Studio 2010 is a simple but reliable, easy to use introduction to photo editing, video editing, CD and DVD production and it assumes no prior experience or knowledge of photo/video projects.

It loaded smoothly and swiftly and one the installation was complete a Digital Studio 'gadget' was installed onto the desktop. From here you can select Photo (ie photo editing and enhancing), Video (movie production and video editing), Burn (backing up files or data to CD or DVD) or Play (playing DVDs via WinDVD media player).

It's all very easy and straight-forward. Files can be quickly imported from your camera or memory card or you can import existing files from your hard drive into a new project and order or catalogue them using tags.

The video editing suite is basic. It's a scaled-down version of Corel's established 'Video Studio' which is fine for very basic projects such as ordering a set of video clips, adding transitions (9 available), making simple corrections eg colour adjustments or simple trimming of video clips to remove unwanted footage and will create a movie complete with titles, a themed template (5 are included) and audio backing track (one is included - or use your own). You can also add a voice-over to narrate your production.

For more sophisticated editing it simply isn't capable of handling anything complex and anything other than a simple trim of a clip is clumsy and tedious as clips are edited individually on a different screen to the main preview screen which means it's hard to see how the trimmed clip relates to the clips either side of it. Video is also limited to one track and there are no special effects. This is not the package for the more advanced user!

It is extremely easy to create a slideshow with pans, fades, zooms and transitions without any previous experience. Just drag your photos into the order you'd like to show them off, enhance them if you wish (there's even an auto-fix option for this too) and Digital Studio will do the rest and produce a polished and professional slideshow from them within minutes, complete with backing music (one track supplied).

Photo editing is via PaintShop Pro. Imported photos can be enhanced at the click of a mouse or effects, such as 'antique' or an artistic edging applied. Exposure can be adjusted, colours enhanced and corrections made such as removal of red-eye which worked well in my pet rabbit photos. For portrait photos there's a 'makeover' feature which includes a blemish fixer, toothbrush to 'whiten' a smile and 'suntan' to 'tango' white skin! It's a very simple and easy to use package with few frills but is actually very good, fast and effective.

The Burn option opens DVD Factory which can create video and audio discs and files for DVD, CD, MP3 players, camera phones, iPod, iPhone, Sony PSP, hard drive or other storage device. It can also produce backup discs for data storage. I wasn't able to test the iPod and iPhone features but the rest worked reliably and quickly.

Five animated templates are available to add a polished and professional touch to your home movies and all you need to do is drag your imported video clips, create a menu and/or chapters, add titles and a soundtrack if you wish (a backing track is included) and then write your DVD. It is very simple and completely intuitive with buttons to click for each function eg 'Create Chapter'. A Quick Start guide is provided with the software but it's so obvious that you're unlikely to need to refer to it.

Lastly the Play option opens WinDVD - a media player to play CDs and DVDs on your computer with enhancements for colour and sound.

This is a piece of quality software capable of producing very good results for a beginner. It doesn't offer sophisticated or more complex features, particularly for video editing (which is my main interest), but it is very easy to use and user-friendly and is HD and MPEG-4 compatible so can be used with the latest digital cameras.

Digital Studio could be the perfect first choice software for someone who's just bought their first digital camera or camcorder and wants to show off photos and videos, and give them a quick boost without getting too involved in complex or time-consuming editing. It will quickly and easily enhance photos and video and create professional-looking, polished movie productions, slideshows and paper cards and calenders. Videos and slideshows can also be shared with friends by directly uploading to YouTube, Facebook and similar sites.

It won't provide the features and facilities sought by more advanced and experienced videographers but beginners should find this meets all their needs in a reliable and stable package.

By Keith Joseph HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This Corel offering is a new competitor to more established media management software such as Roxio Creator Pro and Nero 9. Rated a solid 4* out of 5 by PC techie magazine 'Computer shopper', Corel's new Digital Studio 2010 offers an integrated media manipulation and CD/DVD burning package comprising of three main applications: Lite versions of Corel Paintshop Photo, VideoStudio and DVD factory. Plus there's WinDVD that offers the required codecs for DVD upscaling and playback, which are lacking in Windows Media Player. Corel Digital Studio isn't a simple bundle of the three applications though, the whole suite has been very well integrated into one streamlined package. Navigation is all held together by Media Organiser view, which displays all your media files as thumbnails, all organised by type, folder, album or project. The organiser can filter files, and quickly bring them into the active zone, one by one, for rapid editing, emailing, printing or archiving them. Plus you have the Share Menu for streamlining file upload to Facebook, YouTube and the like. Windows 7 users also have touch-screen support for image navigation and control.

If you require more detailed media manipulation than offered by the Organiser, you open one of the applications for in-depth work. With PaintShop Photo 2010 you have basic cropping, red eye and straightening 'tidy image' tools, as well as a pop up side panel for more advanced photo manipulation [colour correction, effects, etc.]. And you can navigate through your thumbnailed files easily one by one, to edit/enhance photos as you go. For Video editing there's VideoStudio 2010 that can trim and split video files, adjust brightness/white balance, and apply video noise/blur reduction filters. You can also create your own movies from videos, titles, voice-overs, soundtracks and photos for both DVD and AVCHD output. Plus the software can do things like convert a *.mp3 movie to a *.avi [although it may not be Apple *.mov friendly]. DVD Factory 2010 can then be used to view, store and share your video and photos. You can burn video, photos and slideshows into DVDs, with a professional looking menu based front screen. Finally there's WinDVD 2010 to play back your video and commercial DVDs smoothly with good up-scaling to hi-def.

Minimum system requirements are Windows XP, Vista, or 7, 1.8GHz Duo processor and 1Gb RAM, with 4Gb hard-drive space [however media editing/manipulation requires a decent 'gaming' spec PC to function smoothly and Corel recommend a multi-core CPU over 2GHz, with 2Gb+ of system RAM]. The retail box comes with the install DVD [not a CD] and a useful 41 page Quick-Start printed guide that covers all the software basics. Installation was smooth, installing 1.4Gb of files [The DVD has a few extras: Quicktime/iTunes, Adobe flash Player and Lightscribe burning support for Lightscribe DVD writers].

Software of this type can be buggy on first release though, so ensure you keep the software updated [service packs 1 and 2 have been released, and the latter is apparently important for Windows 7]. That said, Digital Studio runs OK on my 2 year old Windows XP Pro quad-core gaming PC and our new Dell Studio 17 Windows 7 64-bit laptop [which is more than Nero 9 did]. On the Dell laptop [used by my 15 year old daughter], this media software is perfect, as she has just a few hundred 'selected' photos, and a folder full of *.vob TV video files which play perfectly under Corel's WinDVD [Windows Media Player lacks the codec to play them]. So usefully Corel Digital Studio allows a second install on the laptop. However, when busy this software can completely freeze the PC, particularly when first setting up the database of all the photos/videos stored on the hard drives [you could leave it running overnight for this]. For this reason, avid photographers with tens of thousands of photos/videos should avoid Corel's Digital Studio 2010 and head for the likes of Adobe Photoshop/Premiere Elements 8 with it's more advanced image database capabilities - that admittedly still take an age to do stuff, but at least Adobe Elements allows you to ignore setting up a database in the first place.

Overall Corel's Digital Studio 2010 offers far more than freebie Google Picasso, but has less features than its highly rated competitor: Roxio Creator Professional [that has been around far longer and evolved into a very competitive, if sprawling, behemoth package]. This might be a blessing though to those with fewer photos and less techie with video/photo editing, and this Corel Studio 2010 package offers the basics that many home users will require - although more experienced users are probably better served by Roxio's offering. Otherwise this suite's simplicity, ease of use and good integration is its key strength, along with it's reasonably low price and stylish interface. It doesn't offer anything like the shear depth of the more expensive Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Elements 8 double pack that serious amateur photographers and video editors will require, but then this Corel Digital Studio 2010 package isn't intended for this type of customer anyway. Overall 4* for effort, but probably it's better suited to those with relatively simple needs.
