I disagree with Ozzy's review, alas. Of all the textbooks I have used with (hundereds of) students, they almost unanimously consider this the best. It's far from perfect, but fills in many of the gaps left by more popular texts such as the Heinemann series (it also has far fewer mistakes and typos than the Heinemann books). The text is thorough and well spaced on the page, and the examples are generally well chosen. It might be nice to have a third colour in the text (red, perhaps, for the 2nd edition...?), but this is really a minor quibble.

I work on a 'rule of three' when teaching, meaning you generally need three textbooks for any given subject. We bounce between this and the Heinemann (which complement each other well) and then use the SMP books for the odd bit of clarity. (Although excellent on a few things, the SMP books really *do* need explanation by an experienced teacher.)

In short, I recommend this book (and its A2 companion) without hesitation. As mentioned, it's not perfect, but probably the best of the bunch, and works very well alongside the Heinemann. I look forward to Longman/Pearson knocking out some mechanics, statistics, and further maths texts of similar quality.

I purchased this book with a view to refreshing my skills in anticipation of returning to teaching after a 20 year spell in industry. This book was recommended by a local school of some repute. It would be unfair to give a full review since I've only had the book in my posession for a little over 2 hours, and I have scanned only the first few chapters. First impression is that the text is very clear and important notes are quickly identifiable with text in blue boxes. There are lots of worked examples and key features in the examples are highlighted. so far, however, I've found two glaring typos, which if a student is reading may cause some consternation, and therefore the credibility of the book becomes suspect. If the text refers to example 30 and there are only 25 examples what is a student supposed to think? There is a reference to the origin of the quadratic equation formula which will have a student guessing if he's not too bright. The fact it is demonstrated in one of the examples may pass the student by.
There is a CD-ROM that comes with the book and is supposed to show worked exam papers - pity this doesn't work on my Windows 7 laptop. I've spoken to the publishers via their help desk and they just say the software is very old. I've tried searching the web to see if there's later software but no luck so far. There are also references in the book to sections on the CD-ROM; provided it (the reference) doesn't rely on the "Live Player" (an unidentifiable add-in), this appears to be OK.

For those of you would are planned to take AS maths I would not recommend this book as it is not at all student friendly. This book overcomplicates the explanations and most of the book is filled with exercise without an explanation on how to do them. The exercises in the book are also a false representative of the types of questions you would be asked in the exam. Pesonally I would recommend the Heinemann book( it's blue and green) as it gives much simpler explanations and you will be achieving the grades you aspire to in no time. I would also recommend this brilliant website called exam solutions which also helped me massively during my AS year.

Some really good questions in here which can be challenging however the book is quite old and may be outdated. I would check up with the current specification to make sure this book applies to you - still recommended for practice.

This book is working out well for additional practice problems. However, like many textbooks, it assumes a teacher and doesn't provide enough detail in worked out examples for independent study. If you want something for independent study then the book by Bostock and Chandler is better.

I would advise anyone to go for it, since its used I thought it would look worn out.On the contrary it looked new for the price relative to the price for a new one.
