5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, funny, subversive book!, 8 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cordial and Corrosive (Paperback)
A wonderful book, in which Sophie Hannah really comes into her own following the marvellous, knowing comedy of her first novel. This book is incredibly clever, without detracting from the sheer fun of reading it. Hannah has taken the basic premise of many a murder-mystery whodunnit, yet the book is all about coming out on top on the shortlist for a job - a cunningly clever blend, which also gives a great insight into the stuffy backbiting of the Oxbridge academic world. Hannah has a wonderful way of writing which brings you in and out of the story with the characters, making this an enjoyable roller-coaster-ride of a read. Most recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real pageturner; a mystery that isn't, for once, a murder, 6 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cordial and Corrosive (Paperback)
This is a dark, intelligent novel, despite its technicolor cover. It examines the unfairness of life; central to its philosophy is the idea that all human beings are essentially selfish, and that there is no moral world order. But, just in case you're worried this novel's too earnest - it's also got a great story (a page-turning mystery, v.grippping and compulsive) - amazingly vivid characters, and you learn a lot about poetry, driving and politics along the way! Sophy Hannah creates a world that seems more real than the real one - an amazing triumph of a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant poet who turns out to be a great novelist too!, 28 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cordial and Corrosive (Paperback)
Sophie Hannah is one of the UK's best-selling poets, and has earned a substantial reputation writing about love, hate, people and their behaviour. The same themes occur in this wonderful novel set in a Cambridge college - Hannah knows the psychology of obsession only too well, and manages to be both lightly readable and darkly compulsive at the same time. I adored this pyschological mystery story - couldn't put it down. Hannah will surely be one of the country's major writers.
