Product Description

Product Description

Corby Flood and her family are about to set sail on the rather ramshackle cruise ship, the S.S. Euphonia. Her boisterous brothers might not have noticed that anything is wrong, but Corby is highly observant and has a lot of time for note-taking and eavesdropping. Onboard, amongst all the odd passengers and eccentric crew, there is a strange group of men in bowler-hats who call themselves The Brotherhood of Clowns. There's also a melancholy wailing sound coming from the hold. It's strictly out of bounds but Corby can't help investigating. What could be inside the crate she discovers down in the hold? As the ship arrives at its destination, Corby must enlist the help of some very well moustachioed locals to uncover the contents of the crate and the dark secrets of the menacing Clowns...

5.0 out of 5 stars FAB FAB FAB, 20 May 2008

I have just finished reading this book to my 7 yr old daughter and 5 yr old son- it is a really good read- a really imaginative fantasy adventure with illustrations which are brilliant. We discovered these books after finding "Ottoline goes to school" by Chris Riddell at our local library. Hugo Pepper and Fergus Crane are also wonderful and perfect to read aloud or for a "free reader" to read to themselves. The hardback books are beautiful they just look so good on the shelf. I just wish there were more....

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Far Flung Adventure, 29 Mar 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
My kids love Chris Riddell and everything he does. This book is the second in his Far Flung Adventures series, which he collaborates on with Paul Stewart. We read Fergus Crane with huge excitement and couldn't wait to read this one.

Corby is a youngest daughter in a large family, headed by a brilliant bridge builder of a father. One of his bridges fell down and disgraced, the family leave their home on the SS Euphonia, to travel round the world and escape their past. On the voyage Corby discovers something mysterious in a box and has a run in with the malevolent Brotherhood of Clowns (all wonderfully named after font typefaces). Much romance, intrigue and mystery on the high seas ensue.

It has the same winning ingredients as Fergus Crane, corking illustrations, an elaborate and slightly mysterious plot, fantastic locations and some really funny episodes. We were slightly disappointed that we didn't get to meet Fergus again, as he is quoted on the book jacket, which made us think he might actually be in the book, but other than that, another crowd pleaser, and one which has left us desperate to read the next in the series, Hugo Pepper.
