Biography

Patti Smith is considered a poet whose energy and vision found its voice in the most powerful medium of our culture, music. As one of the early pioneers of New York City’s dynamic punk scene, she has been creating her unique blend of poetic rock and roll for over 35 years. She was born in Chicago in 1946, the eldest of four siblings and was raised in South Jersey. From an early age, she ... Read more in Amazon's Patti Smith Store

WOW! I'm gobsmacked! BRILLIANT ! - OK so I'm a devout Patti Smith fan (the first album I ever owned was 'WAVE' which an elder brother gave me in 1979 when I was just 15) so I admit I'm biased - but I'm also still Honest (read my other Patti reviews & you'll see that).
'The Coral Sea' CD is a real one-off for Patti - not MUSIC 'Rock & Roll' but 'Poetry with Soul'
Spoken-word (with a single backing 'abstract' guitar).
She reads her tribute book to Robert Mapplethorpe (of the same name) live on stage. It's emotional, powerful and as always with Patti: Genuine & Heart-Felt. Two different performances of the same material on two discs may be a bit excessive but hey, that's cool!
Listen to this album when you're on your own. When you are suffering and in need of some empathy & something un-compromisingly REAL that will make you FEEEEL & ultimately, help you HEAL! -
This material is NOT for the faint-hearted!

Anything Patti Smith does is excellent. One of the superb artists of our time. Maybe only for the lover of Patti.

Being a major admirer of the work of Kevin Shields I felt I had to buy this. I was hoping that it might be something along the lines of John & Yoko's avant-garde piece "Cambridge '69" which can be found on thier album Unfinished Music No 2 Life with the Lions where Lennon provides guitar driven feedback to Yoko's screaming and howling.
Instead you get Ms. Smith reading some lengthy poetry inspired by the late Robert Mapplethorpe, whilst Shields provides a backing of ghostly ambient sounds. I have no problem at all with Shields' contribution, but does anyone truly understand a word of what Smith is dribbling on about?
As a two CD set,it would of a much better idea if the second disc could of just featured Shields alone. Instead you get two versions of the same piece; both performed at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in June 2005 and September 2006. Incidentally the second version is some ten minutes shorter than the first. Maybe even Patti Smith began to realise how terribly boring this stuff really is. Two stars, both for Kevin Shields.

Extraordinary work 11 July 2008
By Steve - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is Patti Smith's most authoritative work since the "Horses" days. She's always been a superb reader of her own work, and in this recital of her tribute to departed friend Robert Mapplethorpe she plumbs mysterious depths of emotion and artistry untapped by the wobbly albums that emerged in the wake of her 1990s return to performing. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine provides simple, spare but never simplistic accompaniment, ranging from organ to effects-drenched guitar. The performances must have been magical, but this recording creates its own spell -- moody, powerful, touching and unbelievably intense.

Very moving -- & highly recommended 25 Aug. 2008
By Abe Lincoln - Published on Amazon.com

One of the other reviewers said this piece echoes her earlier, less overtly political work, and I think that's true. In particular, "Birdland" from Horses comes to mind. At the same time, The Coral Sea is even more intense and demanding of the listener's attention than that. I played to it for the first time on a long drive alone in the car, late at night, so I was able to stay with it. The power of the piece creeps up on you. I was floored by it.

Two Music Icons Collaborate 27 July 2008
By D. Lipp - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If someone said that punk poet laureate, Patti Smith, would be pairing up with My Bloody Valentine's, Kevin Shields, for a live performance, I would have told them to stop using drugs. The two paired up to do a live performance a few years back and the live album, The Coral Sea, is the result. The album is a musical memorial dedicated to Robert Mapplethorpe, a friend of Smith. The live disc includes excerpts from Smith's epic poem of the same title.

Smith, a legend in her own right, comes through with a heartbreaking record and Shields is brilliant as always, accompanying Smith on guitar throughout her spoken word performance. If you're a Smith fan or looking for an original kind of music, this is the album for you.

Great Reading 18 April 2010
By Donald S. Handy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
At one time there was supposed to have been a collection of Patti Smith's poetry reading compiled in an album, I believe by Tim Kerr Records. For some reason this fell through. Which was a shame, as her fans were left with only a few examples of her reading her own poetry to cherish.

This release, along with the release of her very first poetry reading on Mer Records, gives her fans a better understanding of, and appreciation for, her spoken-word performances.

The first disc is the better one, in which she most powerfully conveys the emotion behind the words. Simply reading the words in a book cannot suffice to bring the words to life, now that we have this. Anyone who has purchased the book, and liked it, should feel compelled to purchase this, as well.

I don't have anything by My Bloody Valentine, and this does nothing to make me curious to obtain any. I feel that the concept behind the continous drone behind Patti Smith to be one-dimensional, as though Kevin Shields had one idea, which he bled dry. However, it is never overbearing, and is easily-enough ignored.

If you've wavering on whether or not to purchase this disk, don't. It is an important addition to her cannon, which should not be overlooked.

I have the book version of The Coral Sea but was not prepared for the depth of emotion that Smith brings to her reading. she is always a great reader of her own work and the works of others. the passion she shows here is similar to that in Constantine's Dream on her recent album Banga. this is definitely a must have for those who appreciate Patti's work in all its forms throughout her long career
