4.0 out of 5 stars Some flaws and dodgy scenery but overall good 15 Jun 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
The studio sets and scenery are quite poor at times and there is one scene where 'Corky' is riding in a carriage (supposedly) but it is clearly a static prop with the screen moving behind. In this day and age there is no excuse for such sloppy work. A few references that are historical gaffs - again, no excuse really, researcher needs to do his/her work properly. Example, making reference to "grinning like a Cheshire cat" - a common phrase now after the popularity of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. However, this program is set in 1864, that book was not written until 1865 - yes a minor flaw, but there are many "minor flaws" and they can become irritating. However, on the positive side, the story line running through the series and the plots within plots with a few twists here and there are enough to keep me engrossed. As others have said, in terms of acting ability the star of the show is the young actor who plays Annie; what a talent, so perfectly believable; the adult in a child's body and not a hint of flaw or mistake in her performance - truly gifted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Drama 22 Mar 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
As a Brit I was very pleased (and not overly surprised) to see that this is a BBC America production.
Their first foray into a non-UK based drama, as I understand it.
The cast is outstanding - with Kiara Glasco who plays Annie as one to watch for in the future.
It is cunningly interwoven with historical facts throughout the series.
The international cast is highly is highly believable in the roles they play, the plot rings true throughout.
It is supported with a production ambience that almost makes you smell the rotting filth in the streets and the body odour of the great unwashed poor.
Couple this with a completely engaging plot and you have several hours of TV well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything worked out well. 11 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The eleven year old prostitute steals the show. Her acting reminds me of the young Dakota Faning, with an "old world"
twist. The backround of the American Civil war, is depicted in dark colors, with passions on both sides aiming at an uncompromising conclusion. The Law is in chaos, our protagonist is trying to introduce justice and reason into this world,
with sometimes outrageous methods. Thus creating a more realistic character, that reminds me of the danish miniseries
THE KILLING (Forbrydelsen). I hope this series will continue, it has a lot more potential.

violent, but then it was a violent time. set in very realistic 5-corners area of NYC, a tragic story from a time when tragedy was common. i love the story, the acting is really great, the situations are historically accurate and the sets are very real. all in all a really good series i hope will be around a long while.
