Amazon.co.uk Review

"Scintillating" is the word which comes to mind to describe this performance of Delibes' Coppélia. Both the story and music (here presented in 2.0 Dolby stereo only, which is a shame) are among the most robust in the tradition, and here Oleg Vinogradov's choreography gives us the most extrovert depiction of an already extrovert subject. Highlights abound, but Irina Shapchits's Swanilda and Petr Rusanov's Coppelius are particularly delightful. The former is a boisterous, tomboyish interpretation, providing an additional dimension of contrast with the soullessness of Coppelius' dolls, while the latter eschews the bumbling eccentricity sometimes imposed on the role and instead depicts the dollmaker as an almost wraith-like, Mephistophelian figure. The disc carries one multi-angle option plus a DVD-ROM article by Harlow Robinson which includes a Web link to the label's home page, which is just as well given the drab, parsimonious nature of the accompanying black-and-white booklet. However, just buy this disc for the spectacular performance--you'll be glad you did. --Roger Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kirov Ballet in Your Home., 2 Jun 2006

Tchaikovsky is said to have much admired the ballet scores of Delibes. Of the ballet scores composed by the latter,"Coppelia" ranks in excellence besides those of Tchaikovsky. It is still staged everywhere and DVD productions of it appear every few years.

This one derives from the Marinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, 1993 and features the Kirov Ballet. You'll see the exterior and the interior of the theatre but never the orchestra nor the conductor. The dancing on stage is filmed in close up and from all angles (including from above in one memorable sequence). An audience is not present.

Exuberance typifies the dancing. The dancers are uniformly lithe and lean, athletic and agile. He who dances the Nutcracker in the third scene is capable of amazing contortions. The costumes and their colour contrasts are especially gorgeous. As for the music, it is perhaps the Theme slave varie in the first scene that is the highlight.

I am beginning to think that in this medium (DVD), ballet recreates better than opera in the home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much, 3 April 2007

This is Vinogradov's "Coppelia", -in other words, not the classic choreography for this ballet. The dancers seem to be quite good, but unfortunately they are not given much to do. There are no great solo moments, nothing truly spectacular.
However, since the production is as glamorous as one would expect from Kirov, and the story is presented as a cildren's tale (actually, it is by Hoffmann, but it has been stripped of all its frightening elements,) I think your kids, at least, will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning and uplifting performance, 8 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Coppelia [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
Coppélia, music by Leo Delibes and coreographed by Oleg Vinogradov, is one my favourite ballets of all time. The artists from the Kirov Ballet are superb atheletes with outstanding technique and elegency.
Swandila is danced by the Principle Erina Shapchits, she is a very elegent dancer and a delight to watch. Franz is danced by Mikhail Zavialov, he is a vey energetic and strong dancer, but also very elegent. The coreography of the performance is superbly suited to the artists of the Ballet company, it includes many beautiful pas de deux and beautiful solos. The Dedication of the bell, (scene III) is my favourite scene of all, the scenery and the dancing in the Town square is simply stunning. Watching this Ballet on DVD is very good, the camera angles make you feel as though you are sitting in the best seats in the theatre. It includes many special features such as weblinks and different languages, and makes it a must for all classical ballet lovers.
