Product Description

Product Description
There are over 6,000 suicides in the UK every year, in addition to 160,000 people who attempt suicide. Each suicide leaves an estimated five to eight people closely affected by the death, and nearly 50 percent of the population know someone who has self-harmed. This book is aimed at those whose loved ones have committed suicide, and will also be useful for people working with the relatives and friends of those who have committed suicide. The book covers the reasons for suicide, emotional and practical issues, such as police involvement and arranging the funeral, and where to go for help.

About the Author
Maggie Hadley is a psychologist and counseller, a member of the Association for Death Education and Counselling, and was a counseller for Cruse Bereavement Care for five years. Maggie lives in Bristol. Her mother committed suicide because of an aggressive brain tumour when Maggie was a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on suicide, 9 Jun 2006
I feel compelled to write a review for this accessible and well written book. I found it extremely useful in making sense of my overwhelming feelings of grief and disbelief when my son took his own life. My existence was becoming impossible and I'm so grateful to have found it at such a crucial time. The foreword to Coping with Suicide speaks for the integrity of the book. 'Written with a deep compassion and personal understanding of the anguish left behind after a suicide death, Maggie Helen comprehensively covers the trauma that follows a suicide bereavement and leads a structured and thorough approach through the pain and anguish of people left behind. Her book will be invaluable to all survivors of bereavement by suicide and to professionals in this field.' I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment and found the practical information both helpful and down to earth. I thoroughly recommend it to those who are still asking the question 'Why did they do it?'.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent practical and easy to read book, 29 Feb 2008

(REAL NAME)
I have been reading books on suicide since my partner died last year. Do not be put off by the cover of this book, its 106 pages are packed with practical advice in an easy to read format. It is written from a UK perspective, but everything will apply elsewhere apart from coroners and inquests. The chapters on the impact of suicide and where to find support are particularly good. It also has a specific chapter on youth suicide. It says most of what 'A Special Scar' (the recommended book I read on suicide) says but in far less pages and in plain english. A very useful guide for anyone affected by suicide or anyone wanting more information to understand the impact of suicide.

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommended read, 27 April 2006
This book helped me over a really difficult time. It made me realise that I wasn't going through my grief all alone and that what I was experiencing was just normal. I recommend it to anyone who needs to have factual information about suicide as well as an insight into the emotional turmoil that suicide can bring.
