A wonderfully original compilation of obscure tunes,
This review is from: 01 Copenhagen by Trentemøller (Audio CD)
Trentemoller has largely left his minimalist techno roots behind with this exquisite collection of gems.
I bought this album on the strength of Four Tet's beautiful remix of Caribou's Melody Day - a moving, stripped down anthem with fabulous ensemble vocals from Luke Lalonde, Adem and Little Plane. Whilst this track is one of the standouts, there is a wealth of great stuff on offer here. I Got You On Tape, an obscure Danish jazz combo, weigh in with Somersault - a gorgeously chilled slice of mellowness with a dreamy refrain that will stick in you head for days. The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anemone is a shuffling, shambolic chunk of psychedelia that is reminiscent of both Primal Scream and the Rolling Stones. My wife had never heard of Suicide before I bought this album, but she immediately fell in love with the seminal punk/synthesiser duo's edgy offerings of Cheree and Ghost Rider - amazing to think that these tracks are well over 30 years old, they could have been recorded yesterday. Although most of the album is folk/acoustic/post rock/psychedelia, Trentemoller does slip in a couple of stomping techno workouts including an edit of his own, aptly named Vamp. This is a big, phat, grinding voluptuous whore of a track that is such a dirty slab of music that you may need a shower after listening to it. Also worth a mention is the Muscleheads Phosphorescence - a relentless, pounding maelstrom of bleeps and buzzes that will exhaust you just as it reaches its coda. There's a lot more here, including a couple of tunes from Denmark's answer to the Ting Tings, the Raveonettes and the haunting I Turn My face To The Forest Floor by my home town Bristol's own Gravenhurst. All in all a cracking compilation that I can't recommend highly enough.

Every once in a while you might stumble upon a piece of music that speaks to you on such levels that it communicates with the very essence of the human self. Where throw away pop music can be a time filler, and often a time killer, music with real integrity, depth and soul is the kind of thing we actually make time for!
