Product Description

Just as the first wave of Punk Rock washed over, Julian Cope appeared as lead singer with the deceptively pop Teardrop Explodes. As his career evolved he embraced a much more outré musical landscape. Cope is also a noted music writer, having written two highly regarded works on Krautrock and Japrock (post war to punk war Japan). The Head Heritage website is where he describes his idiosyncratic taste for the outer vistas of music: old, new, psychedelic, uncompromising, highly personal and frequently uncomfortable. This year Faber & Faber published a COPENDIUM of this writing and in conjunction with Ace have produced a triple CD soundtrack to the book which is now available on Faber & Faber Records. Never less than real, this compilation is as refreshing as it is challenging. It launches from the opening riff of Lord Buckley into a chronological trip through the dawn of hard rock/psychedelia/soundscapes of the late 60s/early 70s, arriving at the outer limits of punk with the final track on Disc One.. With a great leap across the 80s, Disc Two is an intense, relentless destructo-guitar fest in the age of grunge. By Disc Three anything goes, acoustically or electrically driven, but the intensity does not abate. Not for the faint-hearted, the whole set is held together by the Cope doctrine of music. All of the music, sequencing and audio have been overseen by Julian Cope. A limited edition of 2000 copies

Absolutely fabulous compilation of experimental avant-garde rock, with a lot of tracks (especially on the second and third cds, who collect music from the last two decades) from unsung overlooked musicians who deserved a better exposure (and this was the first reasons for the Album of the Month blog that has been collected on the Copendium book). This is mostly deep listening hard psychedelic freak out music, that follow on the tradition of Blue Cheer, Stooges, Amon Duul I e II, Neu, Chrome, Flower Travelling Band, krautrock, noise, doom metal, punk and post punk, Earth, SunnO)), etc. Not everyone cup of tea probably. Compilation of the year. Nice booklet with extracts from the book. Would love a volume two!

This is the perfect company to the book, some bands are really awesome. Most of the bands are really interesting and even the weak bands have something different or just freak enough that makes this compendium a good (or bad as you want)trip into the underground.

this is absolutely tremendous. if you want to know what an evening round the drudes house is like, i'm expecting this.
interested in his influences, anything leftfield then get this. capt beefheart seems aor by comparison. i also got the book, and having only read the intro, would also recommend. there are plenty of heavy freakouts, great for keeping folk guessing if you are listening thru heidphones on public transport, or loud if you want to unnerve the neighbours and your family.

Cope has done a good job in collecting and assessing some less-known music here, the music itself is great but the booklet is a must have to appreciate it fully.
