la citta' degli sbirri e' a due passi da new york: vi abitano per lo pi poliziotti, molti dei quali corrotti, senza scrupoli, a volte piu' spietati dei delinquenti. abitano con le rispettive famiglie, e un onesto sceriffo il quale, scoperta una certa corruzione, decide di non esserne complice. ma nessuno puo' fermarli, la terra degli sbirri e' diventata ormai un luogo dove il crimine prospera impunito.

This movie shows a side of Stallone we haven't really seen since Rocky I. He plays a sleepy sheriff in a sleepy town surrounded by crooked cops, but not really having the guts to do anything about it. With a cast that included Harvey Keitel, Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Michael Rappaport and others you'd expect Stallone to be unnoticeable, But not only does he hold his own, he shines through as the star of the movie. With great direction and cinematography this is a film worth watching again and again

The title "Cop Land" refers to an area of New Jersey where police officers and their families are in majority. Most of the cops work in the big city (NY) and the only law enforcer left is Sheriff Freddy (Sylvester Stallone), a docile, overweight, and half-deaf guy who lives alone. Always the diplomat, Freddy doesn't realise at first that something as nasty as corruption is starting to infest his cop neighbors/friends. As things get hot, Freddy is drawn ever closer to a point of no return for the second time in his life (the first time was when he without thinking jumped into the river and saved the life of a woman he still loves).
This is one of the best "crime dramas"/"cop thrillers" I've seen. It's intelligent, suspenseful, and has some very nice characterizations. Stallone does an unforgettable performance here, taking advantage of his gentle manner of speaking and his slow, sweet smile and adding a depth to his character that makes you really care for this guy. The rest of the cast is also great, especially Keitel and Liotta (who looks more bloated then ever).
Who will win the dirty game of corruption? That is the question which is being played out with ingenous plot complexity and strong emotions sizzling beneath the surface. If you choose to spend some time with Freddy & the gang, you'll find it was a time well spent.

This movie is a wonderful piece of storytelling. Sylvester Stallone is impressive as a small town sheriff standing aside in the midst of a police corruption. The acting was absolutely excellent with Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro all delivering outstanding performances. Every moment of this film is tense and exciting, especially the shootout ending.
Cop Land is a movie that is worth veiwing for its exceptional performance, its interesting story and for being so entertaining. I highly recommend it!

An okay film made great by its cast
When you have heavyweights Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel on board, you expect some pretty damn fine acting. And, of course, from those two (and Ray Liotta) you get it. Read more
