Funniest Christmas Comedy Ever 18 Oct. 2010
By The Comedy Critic - Published on
Format: DVD
This is Laugh-out loud funny! This film affected deeply. Under the obvious veneer of slapstick comedy silliness is an insightful examination of families and holiday rituals of middle class North Americans. (Although filmed/set in Canada, there is little that would not resonate just as loudly with folks south of the border).

Production design is outstanding. The verisimilitude to 1985 is incredible... The level of detail was way beyond the budget of this film...

Comedy that pokes fun at a situation at ALL possible levels, and yet doesn't go too far is very rare. There is so much going on, that this film deserves a closer second look. The mannerisms, the background details, the twists of phrase, the sub-themes (with subtle set ups and thus richly rewarded pay-offs) all build to create a comedy that gets under your skin... I know, I expected to just laugh a little and not think about this again. This film dredges up memories, resonates with your perceptions of your family and your past celebrations. The fact that I was a young adult in 1985 and can vividly remember the clothes, expressions and mannerisms just makes the film more rewarding. If you were old enough to remember 1985, RUN don't walk, and see this movie.

Coopers' Christmas pushes so many buttons at so many levels that it might at first glance to be a typical laugh and forget comedy. This is, in my opinion, a far deeper, richly textured film on Marrage, Family, Relationships and Holidays. You will laugh (there is antics galore) yet it will cause you to think about what is important in your relationships. Wonderfully Funny yet Warm and Touching.

Coopers Comedy 9 Dec. 2010
By Tim Lasiuta - Published on
Format: DVD
Coopers Christmas is one of those films you either love or hate. Being a film viewer who loves the offbeat productions (Man With the Screaming Brain, Bride and the Gorilla), this one is alright.

Films of this genre often hit and miss in the same scenes. This film is like that. It is both funny, vulgar, and crude at the same time. The 1985 family christmas of the Coopers goes awry when Uncle Nick arrives to spend the holiday with them. Christmas turns from fun to fanatic. There is physical comedy, dirty comedy, and innuendo. Much like Cheech and Chong, the comedy works at many levels.

One key element of the film is the VHS video camera. Having been filmed from an early age by our father in 8 mm, VHS, then beta, hi 8 and now digital 8, you just can't replace the first family videos as much as you might like to.

The film stars Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, Dylan Everett, and Mike Beaver. Some film casts just work well.

If you are fans of National Lampoons' productions, then you will like this one.

Cooper Review 1 Nov. 2010

I saw this movie a little less then a year ago while on an Air Canada flight when it was called Coopers Camera. I have been looking for it every since. I am told I have little to no sense of humor, and this was the funniest movie I have ever seen. It may because because I grew up with the drunk uncle, crazy grandma, and in the 80's. I pre-ordered for myself a few friends as well.

For those who don't like the holidays, or just like 'em dark… here is YOUR movie! 27 Dec. 2013

Let's see, infidelity, incest, alcoholism, physical violence, destruction of property, lies, anger, resentment….. Merry, Merry! Not only is this my favorite Holiday movie, it is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. A word of warning (if my opening sentence didn't spell it out)… If you don't like dark movies, STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE! If you like things like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Trailer Park Boys or Strangers with Candy, then this will be right up your alley. I love Christmas Vacation (til now, the benchmark for modern holiday comedies) but I like to get weird and Coopers Christmas oozes all the dark, awkward, awful weirdness anyone could ever want. The writing is quite genius. The character Uncle Nick, played by Mike Beaver, has some of the funniest lines I've ever heard and even when he is seemingly blathering on about nothing, he is dropping some of the craziest and most inappropriate things you couldn't think of if you had a million years. This isn't for everyone but if dark comedy is your thing this is well worth at least 1 watch.
