Hugely fun.

Product Description

When Peter York and Anne Barr wrote "The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook", they were responsible for the birth of a phenomenon: the Sloane. A generation on Peter York - 'The Nancy Mitford of our time,'("Financial Times") - has spotted a new trend in British society. From Camilla and Charles to Zac Goldsmith and David Cameron posh is back in vogue and bigger than ever. But who are the new generation Sloanes and what exactly do they do? From what they wear, where they live, who they love and how they lunch, "SR II" is the only handbook to the heart of British society. One simply cannot afford to miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 1 Oct 2007
I found this a witty and accurate portrayal of one of Britain's most powerful and extraordinary social groups. Very funny, it frequently made me laugh out loud in the way that it captures stereotypes so accurately without being snide.

The pictures are hilarious and the illustrations brilliant. I would highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Fun and a Must-Read for Anyone Living in England or Dealing With English, 17 Oct 2007
The complex and traditional society that England is can be completely closed and alien for foreigners for many reasons. This is a social manual of sorts to understand modern Britain, far beyond Sloanes' tribe, which is thriving and is now further split into classes and groups. Some newspaper reviewers argue that many of the people in this book aren't Sloanes at all, well, perhaphs, but they are 'cousins' nevertheless.

Witty, well written, the book is timely and fun. I was frustrated to had finished it so quickly and wish there were a TV series based on the theme to get a weekly fix. For once there should be something half-inspirational, tired of watching all the English losers on TV, even if as pleasant and disarming as Rodney and Dell Boy! The TV is destroyed by Little England's atrocious pronuciations, monied chavs are omnipresent, while class is hard to come by.

Great book to get in touch with the latest trends, accurate and very charming. MUST BE CONTINUED AND UPDATED REGULARLY!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars pale imitation, 29 Sep 2007
By Charles Leggatt - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Pitiful. A shadow of the orginial which codified a living, breathing, vibrant tribe. The first page of Cooler, Faster, More Expensive recognises that times have radically changed and, ipso facto, The Age of The Oik has destroyed the Sloane. But then, in focusing on the odd exception to this death-rule, the book tries to prove the contrary (that the "Species Sloane" IS, in fact, still alive, kicking and in all tradtional leadership and other roles.) Very muddled.

A follow up on the original Henry and Caroline (plus family) would have been interesting - but a sad epitaph on fundamentally decent people, and thus not the stuff of a commercial book.
