I was SO excited when I got this for Christmas - I'd been itching for an e-reader for AGES! I was all upset within hours of opening when the blasted thing told me my eBooks in EPUB format were unreadable (that's the main format) I downloaded some glitch software which sorted it out, telling me it was a problem with my COMPUTER. I'd never had any of these problems before. Even so, I plodded on, liking my green e-reader because of how beautiful it was, how sleek and how handy. I never got to carry it around slipped into my bag like I wanted, because before we'd even went out it crashed.(this is all still Christmas day, by the way)The e-reader website only said it would crash due to lack of charge - I'd just charged it up! I hadn't done nearly as many page turns as they promised - only abut twenty! Eventually I found out from a different site there was a reset button on the back you could press when it froze. Doing so it started to work again.

Not so long after this I turned it on after not using it for a day or so. It crashed on load-up. Confident this time, I pushed a pen into the reset button And again. Nothing happened. We tried everything to stop it from being frozen. Nothing worked, giving up, but still within warranty, we sent it back to Cool-er. Almost a month later, it arrived (in blue, not my original colour because they were out of stock and I would have had to wait another month.)

Excited I started to carefully peel off the protective film on the reader, careful not to let any damage come to its shiny exterior. The front was perfect. I started to peel away the back and the shiny glaze, or whatever it is, comes off with it leaving an ugly dull blue plastic-y splodge on the reader, and the metallic blue glaze on the protective film. Some protection THAT turned out to be! My advice - chose a different e-reader. Although, admittedly, the new one didn't freeze on the load-up. Yet.

First off this thing is most suited to reading long-form text out of the box (i.e. plain books).

It does handle pdfs with images but there are two kinds of pdfs - scanned text and printed text. It can read printed text well but I would forget about scanned text.

The device appears as an external USB hdd - you can just load documents onto it and you are good to go. A better way is to download the open-source ebook software 'Calibre' for Windows/Mac/Linux and manage it through that as it can do some conversion to make stuff more readable before it moves it over. Most document formats are handled by the device but if you are trying to use an unsupported one Calibre will convert it for you.

It has an mp3 player which is a waste of buttons - save your battery for the reading. The battery life is not great however (a week on standby?) and the device seems to trip out if left untouched for half a week or so. It is easily fixed by connecting to a computer or I would tape a needle to the back of it somewhere in order to reboot it.

A good entry level ebook reader and has no DRM issues you may have with the Kindle.

My first Cool-er didn't appear to load properly from new and crashed irrevokably after three days. I returned it to Argos and swapped it for a new one. That then started loading at start up three or four times over before being able to access any books and has recently needed a factory reset. I downloaded and installed the updates via an SD card which seemed OK. However, the on/off button has now broken off completely so I can't actually switch it on without plugging into the mains first. It switches itself off after 10 minutes - neither of those aspects is useful for travel which is why I bought it in the first place. I'm now about to buy something different - not sure which one yet, but if you're contemplating an e-book reader, I certainly wouldn't buy this one.

The Cool-ER is a great piece of equipment, making reading a pleasurable pastime. And the best being that you ca carry hundreds of books in such a small space.
